Direct TV: Why do people hate it?

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned Passions crossing over to DirecTv's Channel 101 in September, which is now 6 weeks left on NBC and 7 for Direct TV. Many people said they hate it and won't subscribe. Others said they love it and have it. There's now a deal for having four months free for a package if you subscribe between now and then to get Passions. I might or might not get it. Why do you people hate it? And do you have to have a flat screen TV to have it?

because they make offers like that then when you actually call they demand something else. In the fine print is "on approved credit" and all those wonderful $39/month deals - they change to a $200-250 deposit when people I know actually call to help. They claim it's because of getting stuck with payments but you pay 2 months in advance there's zero chance of getting stuck when people are paying in advance. They forget that television is a **LUXURY** and we don't *have* to have it. And when *THEY* approach *ME* for service than change it...nope not gonna do it.

Our cable selection sucks - but there's no reception without it. And both satellite companies want unreasonable "deposits". Also people have signed up then weren't happy with it and were locked into 18 months of payments for nothing.

    There's also reception issues.

I've had bad experiences with Direct TV in the past (basically the little weasels lying to me about how much it would cost). When I moved recently, I let another little lying weasel convince me to go into another 2year contract for upgraded services that he swore up and down would be no more than $91.00 a month. (My bill has never been less than $104.00 a month since I talked to this piece of crap). Also, I can't use my DVD player. The tech just left wires hanging in the air in the back from it, and I have no idea what to attach them to. When I called Direct TV, they told me they were only responsible for the TV & not the DVD player. Said something was wrong with my DVD player. They're full of ****! NEVER AGAIN! Fooll me once, shame on me--fool me twice, and I'm an idiot. And for the next year and a half I guess I'm an idiot until I can dump their lying *** & NEVER have anything to do with them again!!! They don't give a **** about their customers.

    Hi Kristen,

There have been studies done that show that people who have had a bad experience with something are about 10 times more likely to tell people about it than those who have had a good experience. (We used to hear this in the restaurant business all the time.)

Basically, it's human nature to complain.

Also, I think sometimes people get confused about the way their experience was vs the way it is with 99% of people.

For example, one person who answered here complained that Direct TV's deals are only good for people with "approved credit," and cited it as a negative.

The reality is that, unless you have a really, really, really bad credit history, this is never going to factor into the equation. But if you're the person with that really, really bad credit, it's probably going to tick you off and you're going to complain.

As for switching deals, or offering one thing and then switching it to another, that can only happen if you let it happen. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

Both Direct TV and Dish have stellar customer service records that are documented. And both beat cable in customer satisfaction year in and year out. (This is a fact -- look it up.)

And if you order service online, you know exactly what you're getting. You don't even deal with a salesperson, so there's no one who can pressure you into upgrading service.

I ordered Direct TV service online in April and didn't have single problem. I love it.

But there are also other services, like Dish, that you might want to think about.

Try comparing the two to see which is offering the better deal. They're always in competition, so they always try and outdo each other.

Here are two sites I used when I was trying to make a decision about which company to go with. You may find them useful:

    http://www.squidoo.com/dish_network_vs_direct_tv

    Hope that helps.

Their contract conditions literally binds the subscribers for upto 18 months. people who live in apartments end up being victims of this. If they move and cannot install Direct TV in the appropriate direction, then you have no choice but to end the contract and pay a ridiculous amount out of your pocket.
