Why do people drink blended whiskey?

They're not superior...just different.

The bottom line is that if you like it, drink it. Blends allow for consistency from one year to another. Single barrels and single malts are like wines...one year can be better than another. Besides, not everybody is as discerning and they just want something simple and consistent. There *are* good blends out there. If that's not your taste, then so be it. That leaves more single malts for those of us who appreciate it.

Some places it's hard to find single malts. Thankfully, not where I live but I have noticed on occasion while traveling that blended whiskeys are often the only ones available.

It gives a more consistant flavor, even if it has less specific character. Still, I agree with you, but to each his own.
