I live in Mexico's Yucatan state.

  • Regarding John Newton: "After attempting to desert, he received eight dozen lashes...".?

Just wondering why the sentence would be in dozens. Were lashes administered in sets of 12? i.e. 12, rest, 12, rest, etc. or is this just an archaic way of saying 96 lashes? Thanks.

  • Is there a stronger word than homophobic?

A word that would imply a deeper hatred or an escalation to anti-gay violence? Or would they all just be varying levels of homophobia?

  • Concert ticket pricing "VIP" sections trend?

About 4 years ago I moved to Mexico from Canada.

It seems that whenever a big name concert is coming to town here in Mexico there is always this VIP type option with tickets costing hundreds of dollars. I mean $600-$800 USD for one seat.

So - is this VIP seating thing a Mexican thing or is this sort of thing happening now in the US and Canada too?

  • How does this answer violate the guidelines?

Someone asked where to watch Rugby games on TV in the US and I answered:

"The website rugbyrugby.com has listing by city in the US, the link is below: http://www.rugbyrugby.com/RUGBY_ON_TV/story_391.sh... It lists both networks like some of those already mentioned as well as clubs/pubs/bars etc. that regularly show rugby. Obviously I can't verify the information for all the cities but I can say that on a similar page for Toronto the listing are very accurate and up to date."

Yahoo removed the answer and deleted my 10 points. The answer BTW was given about 4 years ago & the link is no longer valid. Would that be why?

  • What is cola wine? (Reggae song reference)?

I know this is not a travel question but I figure people who know Jamaica would be in this section and more likely to know the answer.

In the song "Sweet and Dandy" by Toots and the Maytals there is a mention of "cola wine'. What is cola wine?

    Thanks.

  • Why are there so many people of Amerindian decent in Mexico?

What makes the colonization of Mexico different that there are so many more Amerindian or mixed race Amerindians as compared to the USA or Canada?

Below are the numbers from the CIA world factbook so you can see the basis of my question.

Mexico Ethnic groups: (CIA world fact book)

    mestizo (Amerindian-Spanish) 60%, Amerindian or predominantly Amerindian 30%, white 9%, other 1%

Canada Ethnic groups: (CIA world fact book)

British Isles origin 28%, French origin 23%, other European 15%, Amerindian 2%, other, mostly Asian, African, Arab 6%, mixed background 26%

USA Ethnic groups: (CIA world fact book)

white 79.96%, black 12.85%, Asian 4.43%, Amerindian and Alaska native 0.97%, native Hawaiian and other Pacific islander 0.18%, two or more races 1.61% (July 2007 estimate)

note: a separate listing for Hispanic is not included because the US Census Bureau considers Hispanic to mean persons of Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin including those of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican Republic, Spanish, and Central or South American origin living in the US who may be of any race or ethnic group (white, black, Asian, etc.); about 15.1% of the total US population is Hispanic

  • Why wouldn't an oil rig have a shut off valve?

I understand when you are actually drilling then you have parts moving around but when it comes to extracting the oil, why isn't there a shut off valve? There's got to be a reason. It's just way too obvious not to have one so what's the reason? Why not just put a valve right at the point where your pipe exits the earth. Heck put in two one above ground and one below ground.

  • Why do people feel the need to continually ask "Is Mexico safe?"?

This question is asked at least 10 times a week for the last year. Can't they just look at any one of the other question/answer threads?

  • New Mexico Questions in the Mexico section.?

So... I see questions about New Mexico fairly regularly in the Mexico travel section.

Is there any explanation for this other than some people failed geography?

  • Movies in Mexico - How do you tell the language from the listing?

I'm looking at the movie listings and I see some movies marked with [Subtitulada] (subtitled) & [Doblada] (Dubbed). But what does it mean if nothing is indicated?

Specifically I'm looking at Invictus playing at the altabrisas mall in Merida Yucatan on this site:

    http://www.cinepolisvip.com.mx/

It lists just the times. I see the trailer is subtitled is it safe to assume that the movie would be the same?

  • France's responsibility to Haiti?

Lots of questions, answer some or all. Any info or sources are appreciated.

I know that after years of fighting for their freedom Haiti was forced to pay France 150 million francs (1825) in compensation for lost property (mostly plantations and slaves). I know in the past there have been calls for France to pay this sum back.

Has Haiti ever actually been able to pay this money extorted for her freedom or did the loan just put and keep Haiti in a state of perpetual debt?

Has or does France give aid to Haiti? If so how much and what forms?

Has France ever paid any of this money back? Has there ever been any serious pressure on them to do so?

  • What's Sobrecuota? AeroMexico charge?

My AeroMexico ticket price breaks down like this:

    1 Adulto $1,660.00

    Impuestos $846.05

    Sobrecuota $624.36

    TOTAL $3,130.41 MXN

I understand what the cost of the ticket is and the taxes but what is Sobrecuota? Google translate says "overquota" but I still don't know what that is.

    thanks

  • Veracruz-Villahermosa?

I actually need to get from Veracruz to Ciudad del Carmen but I would normally drive through Villahermosa on the 180 toll road. Does anyone know if the current flooding has effected the toll road between Veracruz and Villahermosa? If so can you suggest an alternate route? Final destination is Merida, Yucatan & currently in Veracruz, Veracruz.

  • Honest fair trade chocolate products?

With Halloween approaching I'm looking at fair trade Chocolate. It seems to me to be way over priced. ($9.95 for 40 small pieces)

I don't want to sound suspicious but I know that even fairly paid farm workers in the Ivory Coast and such are still paid very little by the standards of developed countries so why should the chocolate be 3 or 4 times more expensive?

I also read that Cadbury in the UK is fair trade certified does anyone know if that applies to all Cadbury or just UK? In my case it would be Cadbury Canada.

Are there any other major brands that are fair trade certified?

  • Yucatan State - Why am I hearing fireworks this last week?

For the last week or so I keep hearing fireworks from my home in Mexico's Yucatan State. Sporadically day and night. I live at the beach so is there an occasion or is it just because people are on vacation?
