What makes a good driver?

And I'm not meaning no tickets, and no accidents. I have seen some people with no tickets and no accidents cause them because of thier inattention to the road (friends and cliants). My father is one of the best drivers I know, he has taken well over 40 different driving classes for police training, and other defencive driving coruses, he is an amazing driver, and he still had an accident (not his fault, he got rear ended and pushed under a flatbed a long time ago). Some insurance companies wont even look at his application becasue he has had that accident.

In your opinion, what makes a driver good, and what makes a driver bad?

Update:

(My fathers fine, this was back when he owned a 2 year old Pinto, some time ago).

Update 2:

(My fathers fine, this was back when he owned a 2 year old Pinto, some time ago, before I was born. He got rear ended by a Chevy truck with the big bush bumper and then got pused under the back of a flatbed trailer. He crawled out the back passenger window and walked away with only scratches and bruses, appairently you couldn't tell the vehicle unless you know what it was to begin with).

A good driver is comprised of many things:

    1. has no tickets (either because they haven't been caught or because they legitamately obey the law).

    2. has not been involved in an accident of their own creation

    3. anticipates the actions of other drivers

    4. doesn't engage in road rage

    5. drives within his/her means (not over their head)

    6. doesn't sacrifice control of his/her vehicle for speed

    7. minimizes the amount of distractions around him/her

    8. operates a reasonably safe vehicle

    9. slows down during inclement weather

    10. does not take chances with overtaking or changing lanes with larger vehicles (trucks)

    11. doesn't drive when ill or fatigued

I think a good driver is someone who knows their car like the back of their hand, can drive without causing an accident, observant, knows how to react in certain situations if something goes wrong, looking behind you (in the mirror) as well as on front, and to expect something is always going to go wrong and have a plan to get out of it.

But I know that no matter how good of a driver you are...there is always that bad driver that ruins your good record.

Hope your dad's alright (even though it was a while ago) and good luck driving! Watch out for those crazy drivers!

    Cheers!

A good driver here has focus on the road, and knows the limits of both the car and the law. My dad also drives well, a brilliant one, that too. But he's had an accident thrice. Not bad ones though, but it is not neccesary people drive cautiously when you do. You can avoid an accident but not stop them from happening.

A good driver gives his full attention to the road, at the same time being able to be a relaxed driver and interact with passengers, without losing focus on the road.

A good driver will try never to lose his temper at another driver, even if he knows he is right and the other guy is wrong.
