A Little Rust Under the Hood of a 1999 Firebird Trans Am?

I test drove a '99 Trans Am earlier today. Before I drove it, my friend and I looked under the hood, and some of the nuts and bolts were rusty, otherwise the motor was clean, and the major parts. I noticed the hinge of the drivers door had some rust on it as well, but it wasn't anything big. The rotors had a bit of rust on them, they all do, and my friend said they looked fine.

I've heard about about some shady independent dealers getting cars from Katrina and polishing them up, only to have problems later.

Honestly the car ran well, it does need new brakes, and I don't think it would cost too much to get new nuts and bolts in some places, however my friend said he wouldn't want to get involved with it. I didn't expect the car to be in pristine condition, especially since its a '99.

Any opinions are appreciated. It's been really hard to find a Trans Am where I am (Ohio), let alone one that's priced within my range. The dealer is asking $9,450 and I was thinking asking $7,800

Update:

EDIT: I've heard bad things about carfax, like that they don't check in 20 states, and that only reported accidents will show up.

So if someone had problems with a car, but never told the insurance agency, and just got it fixed, it wouldn't show up on carfax.

My friend thought it was driven in the winters. I'm getting a second opinion about how problomatic the rust may or may not be

i would say its just normal wear one way to tell if it has been flooded is to run the heater and smell the air, bacteria will grow in the vents.

Ewww, that's a hard one. Since you DO live up north, you kinda have to expect some rust. That is kinda weird that it is under the hood, though. Is it in the wheel wells also? That is usually the tell-tale sign of a northern car. Anyway, why don't you try Carmax and see if you can get a Trans Am from the south? Carmax has everything! =0)

Have you ever owned a Trans Am before? I've owned 3 and I have learned my lesson.

They are great looking cars to be sure. They are comfortable to drive and they handle well. But all three of mine were in the shop constantly and the repairs are never cheap. When I went out to buy my last vehicle a friend of mine asked me if I was going to get another Trans Am and I replied, "No. This time I think I'll get a car that actually runs."

ask for a carfax report on the car from the dealer it will tell you the history were it came from and if any thing happened to it Major damage flooded etc. if they tell you no you might think of telling them no deal and go else wear or you can get it yourself on-line for a small fee

I had a 1974, 455 super duty, racing trany, headers, and Nos. babe and cop magnet. It came from Pontiac Mich. where they salt the streets and roads in the winter, therefore lots of rust.

Once you get this car, you'll be able to score lots of hot babes. See if they can throw in an AC/DC tape to sweeten the deal.
