If there were no hell, then there would be no real reason to listen to the father?

This was an answer to a recent question about the doctrine of hell. If you believe this, does this mean you think God has nothing to say or offer that could supersede the threat of eternal torment? That would seem to me to be a low estimation of God.

All answers welcome, even if you don't believe in God or hell.

Update:

Eds, I used the part of your answer that made me go "hmmm." I didn't leave out that much - a sentence, maybe. It doesn't make sense to me that the only reason to listen to God is the threat of hell. It's not why I believe in and love God.

Update 2:

Interesting answers, all. I am throwing this to public vote because I don't want to choose based on my own bias. Thanks!

Judaism doesn't believe in hell. Chew on that, yo.

Just because there is so heaven or hell, it doesn't mean that you through away the noble ideas carried with the two. You know, love each other and stuff like that. Without ideas like that, and without religion, the world would be a much different place.

Some say for the best, because there'd be no extremists. But there would also be no 'universal' moral code that all major religions follow.

Yes, Patrone07 has it right. There are two places in eternity: Heaven and Hell. If Hell does not exist, then there would be absolutely no reason for Jesus Christ to be killed on the cross. If Hell is not real, Christ died for nothing. I assure you, Hell exists just as Heaven does.

Be good to each other and God Bless

You are right, but many people do base their religion on something like that....it is a SAD thing....religion is not taken seriously by some....and if it is followed to the T....it is to the extreme....I think religion is good for some....but I do not agree with Brandon P in saying that you do not have morals without religion....I myself do not have a religion, but I do not put down people that do....religion is good, in that it gives people hope and faith, but you CAN be a GOOD person without it....right and wrong and the want to be a good person should not be based on the fear that if you do not you will "burn in hell" or be shunned....People should WANT to be good, because being nice should make people feel good and they should get that treatment in return....I also do not think people without religion should be shunned....

In "reality," we ARE in "hell." Even "Jesus" made this "clear" but so many MISS it. Why else would he HAVE TO go UNTO the Father in heaven ? (Ascended) HELL is "this world" and the possessed swine were to prove a "point." Those who are found "unworthy" of the kingdom of heaven NEVER "ascend" into the "world" of the Father in heaven. All a person needs to do with all that Jesus taught is LOGICALLY add it all "together" to KNOW "this" is the world the holy in heaven call HELL...........

What more eternal torment than being forgotten by God after dying and not being brought back to enjoy everlasting life in a peaceful paradise.

Non-believer. Of course there is no reason to listen to god, that is just a way of rallying people done by religion, they scream hell into your face, that's how they earn money.

In eternity, souls are either with God in heaven or without God in hell. It is one or the other, and we all have the choice. God bless.

This is only a small part of the answer that was there. Please include the rest of it if you are going to include a portion. I do not have a low estimation of GOD but the question was worded in such a way that I felt this answer was adequate.

To become a Christian, we are told that we must HEAR the WORD in John 6:45, Jesus said, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” We are also told so in Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. We are told the we must BELIEVE in Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. We are also told so in Mark 16:16, Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” and in John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. We are told that we must REPENT (or turn from sin) in Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Also in Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. We are told to CONFESS CHRIST in Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We are also told in 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. We are to be BAPTIZED according to Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” and Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. We are to CONTINUE to be FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH according to Revelation 2:10c Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. We also know that Paul wrote in Romans 14:12 each of us shall give account of himself to God. It is important that we not ignore what is written, change what is written, or add to what is written in the New Testament. It is our Christian Guide. Have a great day!

    Thanks,

    Eds

    The full answer was:

    Ann,

If there were no HELL then you and everyone else would have no real reason to listen to the FATHER. HE certainly has outlined exactly what one needs to do to be in eternal bliss. Have a wonderful day.

    Thanks,

    Eds

That is correct, there is no hell, so you don't need to kill witches, homosexuals, and disobedient kids to avoid eternal damnation, isn't life grand?
