What is your opinion? Bunny peed on roommates couch cusion. Should I pay for the whole living room set?

He peed on a small spot while sitting on my lap because her dog came running up the stairs (came home unexpectialy). I offered to get the spot cleaned (even though it was small). She sends me an e-mail saying that I owe her 250 for the cleaning! She got the whole couch cleaned, and the loveseat also cleaned that the bunny didn't even have an accident on. I feel as though she is taking advantage of this. What should I say or do? I offered to clean the spot where he peed (one cushion) not her whole living room set!!

She wants the money by tomorrow, but I dont think this is fair!!

I would pay for what the cleaning cost on the couch. Not the love seat. Tell her you will pay half. Her argument will be you can't just clean one because they won't look right. You should also factor in the possibility of loosing a friend if you don't pay.

I think she is taking advantage of the situation, especially the part about having the loveseat cleaned also.

If your bunny soiled ONE cushion, you should be liable for cleaning the one cushion, not the whole couch.

If your roomate's premise is that cleaning the cushion will make it look "different" (one cushion looks cleaner than the others) than the rest of the couch, I could understand that. And, as a fair person, I'd be willing to split the cost of cleaning the couch (ONLY) with her.

If she still insisted you pay the whole $250 for cleaning her living room set, I'd graciously pay the amount (after I saw the bill from the cleaning company to verify the charges).

Then I would find another roommate or another place to live. I wouldn't be able to live with a dishonest person. What's next? You broke one of her cups so now she wants you to replace her whole set of dishes? You spilled a drop of coffee on the carpet & now she wants all new carpet? It could go on & on.

Firstly no proffessional is going to come to your house to clean one spot on a lounge - it is not worth there time and effort. They will either clean the whole lounge or not at all. Your roomamate probably thought she might as well get everything cleaned while they were here. If the loveseat matched the lounge she may have been worried about it looking different to the lounge and not matching anymore. So I think you should pay for the lounge being cleaned for sure as she had no choice for that but not the love seat unless it matched the lounge. If you live in Australia that sounds over priced but since you were paying she may not have shopped around for quotes. Also the loveseat may not be that much extra anyway so just to keep the peace just pay the whole lot.

I say pay half - and here's why: she probably asked for a spot-clean, and was charged for the entire sofa. As for the loveseat, I don't want to even tell you what I think of her here (since we have to keep it clean), but she's awfully slick. She's either thinking, "might as well take advantage and get the other one clean", or she got a good deal on both the couch and the loveseat - and is inflating the bill to strike a payday.

Both at your expense, of course.

If she calls herself talking you to small claims, by all means let her - any judge with a brain in his/her head will question why she felt she had to have the loveseat cleaned in addition to the couch. Good luck to you - what a *&#@!

I totally agree that it is ridiculous for her to expect that you will pay for cleaning the couch and loveseat. Rabbits don't pee that much first of all. Second of all she should have gotten an estimate and discussed it with you. And BTW it doesn't take a professional cleaning to deal with a little tinkle. She knew you had the rabbit and that is what a security deposit is for. Anyway if I were you I would call to about 5 professional cleaners and ask them SPECIFICALLY How much would they estimate the cost of cleaning one urine stain on a couch. Yes they will give you the per visit blah blah blah but tell them to break it down and realistically tell you a price to remove one stain. Then when you have the average cost you tell your "friend" I called several places (including the one she used) and they said this is a fair price. Give her that amount. I assure you it wont be $250. And if she isn't happy with that then its too bad. Also look for a new roommate. Good luck.

I don't think it is fair either. Unless that bunny hadn't emptied his bladder in awhile- that spot could have been taken care of with just some spray cleaner and outside airing.

I don't know that it would do any good to argue but you might suggest that you would be more than happy to pay for the cost of cleaning the sofa but that the love seat was not a necessary expense.

Good luck- be polite. Remember you catch more flies with honey

Wow that's a bit extreme! A bit of disinfectant and a good scrub would be fine! Think you should tell her you won't pay the total amount, but will go halves with her (even though even thats still extreme) just to keep the peace and keep all nasty thoughts and names in your head. Then I'd just start looking for a new roomie knowing what she's like now. Then, when you leave, put a kipper inside her curtain pole. That'll leave a stench and you can laugh your socks off at her not being able to find the smell. Ha ha ha, serves her right!!!!

She should have gotten estimates before she charged you for it.

You might have to cough up for the couch--I mean, if you get one cushion cleaned but the others are still really dirty, it might not match...I dunno.

But the other one? Hell, no. She should have let you know how much it was going to cost ahead of time and then you could have said, uh, no, you're not going to have somebody clean it--I'll just take the one cushion to the cleaners myself, thank ya very much.

Yes, she's taking advantage of you.

And next time, get some of that Urine Gone stuff...spray it quick and maybe she won't notice.

    Poor bunny. Poor you.

Pay for the couch, but no more.

  • OK 1stly; at John D: It's her roommate, so she probably knows about the rabbit, get a grip.

As for the cleaning bill? Your roomate is being unfair. Not only expecting you to pay the whole whack, but also expecting the money tomorrow!

I think you need to talk to her. Besides all else, I don't see why she couldn't have cleaned it herself, or asked you too, rather than paying someone 250 for it.

    Hope you work something out.

WOW! you should pay for a new cushion or to clean the spot not the whole living room! dont pay for the loveseat cleaning your bunny didnt pee on it. tell her that you refuse to pay for the loveseat cleaning. you said you would pay for the spot cleaning. she shouldnt had gone and cleaned it whithout telling you what you would have to pay for! you should just buy a bottle of spot remover and clean it with a old rag or spounge or you could have just cleaned it yourself whith a rag and warm soapy water. she is just taking advantage of you and probably has been wanting to get her couch cleaned but didnt want to pay.
