Iv got a year old jack russell and a 14 wk old jack russell. the older one was house trained up until we got the puppy, he saw her doing it and started doing it again himself. they both stopped and started barking to be let outside which was great but now they have gone back to weeing in the house again. any ideas or advice?

First and foremost, it is worth getting the vet to check them over. Although water infections are more common in females they can also occur in males.

It is however likely that your dogs are scent marking. Your male could simply be at his peak now and believes he is ready to take over leadership.

Whichever scenareo you have, the answer is the same...

First, let's throw out one popular myth - Neutering is not guaranteed to stop this.

Neither will rubbing the dogs nose in the urine. The dog will simply not understand this at all.

Clean up VERY thoroughly anywhere where your dogs could possibly have urinated in the house. I always recommend blotting up the wet with an old towel or kitchen paper until the area is more or less dry. Then clean with either a pet accident cleaner or biological washing powder and rinse the area thoroughly.

Never use cleaning products with amonia or bleach in them. To the dog, these chemicals smell similar to urine. The dog then thinks another dog has urinated on his patch and will urinate on the same spot again.

If you find either dog has urinated in the wrong place and you did not see it happen. Say nothing and calmly clean up.

If you catch either dog in the act, don't make eye contact or talk to your dog. Silently lead him/her out to the garden ((or wherever (s)he is meant to toilet)) by the collar. If (s)he then toilets in the right place, praise him/her immediately for getting it right. Then quietly clean up the accident indoors.

Whenever your dog gets it right and toilets outside, praise him/her every time.

If (s)he gets it wrong indoors, clean up and say nothing.

They will soon learn that good things happen when they get it right.

    Good Luck :o)

    Start potty training over again...

Whenever the dog is in the house and not crated put a body harness and leash on the dog, tie end of leash to your belt. Wherever you go the dog goes. When you see the dog start to signal (sniff/circle/scratch) that it's got to go than run the dog out to where you want it to go. Praise, reward (immediately) and use a command word consistently. When the dog shows it's learned to go outside consistently by dragging you to the outside than you can undo the leash from your belt. Keep the leash on the dog still and keep an eye on it whenever it is in the house and not crated so if it starts to make an accident you can grab the leash and run it outside. Once it is going outside with no attempted accidents for at least a week than you can take the leash off.

The most common mistake in potty training is giving the dog freedom to roam the house without supervision where the human doesn't see the dog signal it needs to go.

Several reasons. When the new puppy started doing it, he older one saw he got away with it and copied. Or, the older dog was there first, his territory, so marking it.

Jealousy, are you giving more attention to the newcomer.

Above all don't scold, be patient, it does take time to retrain, just keep taking both out more often, don't wait for them to tell you when they need to go, and praise enthusiastically with love, cuddles and treats when they perform outside. How about having a cat/dog flap fitted. I had one for all my Yorkies and never had any accidents in the house.

Why is a 14 week old Jack Russell not house trained?

Firstly, we bred these dogs for many years and you have over looked the fact that these dogs are HIGHLY intelligent. You can train them in a week. By showing them what to do, they pick it up very quickly. Always remember that a dog will need to pee as soon as it wakes up. Literally. Like, when it wakes up (not house trained) you walk outside, and call your dog. It will follow you. Take it onto grass or someplace where you want it to pee and wait. Do the whole "good dog" thing every time they get it right. Also, reward them when they do it for themselves.

If any of your dogs pees in the house and you see it, do you leave them to finish? Or do you pick them up half way through, rush them outside and say firmly "no"? Another easy thing is realising when dogs pee. If you lock them inside on a carpet all day, of course they are going to pee. Put your dogs in the kitchen, put down newspapers everywhere and see where they go most. Then put paper down there and leave them in the kitchen. They obviously need somewhere to go when they are in the house - make it acceptable ONLY to go in the kitchen and ONLY when you are not at home (unless they live outside - I am in the UK). As soon as you get home, let the dogs out of the kitchen and walk outside - make them both follow you and leave them outside until they have both gone. Let them walk outside and back inside.

Another very small tip is to let your dog walk on the grass in teh evenings. The damp grass against their belly makes them pee a lot easier!

Also - please tell me you didn't get 2 males??? If so - I would suggest a trip to the vet. They could be marking their territory. Which is going to be fun for you! If you have 2 males, you are going to enforce no peeing in the house even more!

Good luck though! They are gorgeous dogs!

That is a tough one. I know that you can get puppy training pads for the floor, kinda like the equivalent of a litter box for a cat. Maybe they might work. Though it seems to be a psychological thing. The older dog is copying the puppy. Seems like she's the dominant one!

The only thing I can suggest is that you regularly take the dogs outside and wait for the time that they do do the business and then lavish him/her with praise for being such a good boy/girl and make a real fuss of them. Keep doing this and they will soon get the message. Good luck.

One time during a night out on the town, we were headed to yet *another* bar, and my buddy took a major leak in a parking lot between two cars. Even in my state, my reaction to this was at least mild disgust. But ever since that day I now find myself doing the same thing.. even in broad daylight. McDonalds, Walmart, the funeral home.. the bank drive through window. I think my friend untrained me like your puppy untrained your older dog. Whenever you find the right answer please be sure to pass it along. My GF is starting to get pissed about it all.. no pun intended.
