That depends on what it takes to make you happy. If you are a serial killer, your happiness definitely takes second place. For us normal people there has to be a balance. You can not be totally mindless of your own happiness. This is the only life you have. To live all of it unhappy would be a waste, but what kind of person would you be if it were the only consideration and you hurt people for personal gratification. One always has to measure the the degree of happiness derived against the hurt it will cause. Take some of the happiness and let some of it go.

I think reality is more complex than this. Some people find, for exaple, that parenthood is tougher than they thought, and they think about taking off and abandoning their family. But how many people could really be happy with that on their conscience? Or maybe you decide to marry someone you love but who your family can't stand. So you have a great marriage but are totally estranged from the rest of your family. Who could be truly happy in that circumstance?

In real life, we have to struggle daily to find a balance between personal fulfillment and fulfillment through service to others. Many people who don't seem to have very exciting lives get a daily thrill from seeing their children's smiles, or from being part of a warm and loving family. Like everything else, we have to find the middle road and follow it as best we can.

My happiness could not ever be at the expense of others, and is never second place when I am conscious of accomplishing it responsibly. Happiness cannot ever be won by fighting, it's lost before the first punch is thrown.

I could never be happy knowing that I was hurting others. There would have to be another route to happiness for me.

This question is not quite as simple as it seems at first glance!!

Frequently, your happiness is tied into making somebody close to you happy.

Despite this, I believe that happiness achieved at the expense of other people, is destined to be short lived.

Hurting other people makes me unhappy, so i would have to have it the other way around. If other people are happy, then I am too.

You should always try to not harm others. Even if they cause you harm.

Good will always come back to you in some way or another!
