How long can lobsters live out of water, waiting to be cooked?
I want to get some lobsters before I go to work tomorrow. I'd have to get them around 3pm, and wouldnt be able to cook them until about 10pm. Is that too long? Should I have someone go and get them for me at a later time?

My hub and I have left lobsters in the fridge waiting to be cooked for 48 hours before, waiting 7 hours is going to be fine!
kylaamn, the lobsters probably died because you used the wrong amount of salt in the water, sea water has about 6% salt content, any more or less will kill any saltwater animal.

My guess would be that your lobsters died due to you putting them in the salt water. the salinity of the sea is roughly 3.5%, not the 6% as stated prior.
Keeping them in the fridge for 7 hours is quite long. Before long the lobsters will start secreting a mucus due to their inability to breathe. If you can get your hands on some fresh seaweed, do so. This will prolong the life of the lobsters to around a day, and possibly two.

1) While the nerves may fail at this point, the brains of lobsters will take a while to reach 25c because their shells have a low thermal conductivity, meaning their insides won't respond very quickly to changes in temperature in their environments. So in theory, they will feel pain for quite a bit until their insides hit the 25c mark. 2) Killing a living thing with a brain and nerves is bad no matter how it's done.

Fresh is the best, then no chance of food borne illnesses coming into effect.
