Is pasta too casual for the wedding reception?

My fiance and I are on a tight budget. Instead of having a chicken or steak dinner, we were thinking of having a pasta bar. Basically, it's a buffet of pasta. Two types of pastas, three sauce options and lots of toppings (like mushrooms, artichokes, olives, ham pieces, etc). We'd also have salad, bread and probably a vegetable side item.

So my question is, does that seem cheap since it's not a meat entree? I've been to lots of weddings with lasagna, but I wanted to have something a little different. We also have a lot of diet restrictions to work with since we're having both Muslim and Kosher guests. What do you think? Any other inexpensive options?

I think it's a great idea. Just make sure to have separate bowls and plates for salad and bread.

And make sure you don't get any sauce on your dress!!! (This is one reason why people have chicken... Marinara sauce stains! Stick to alfredo!)

Everyone has their own idea of what cheap is. It all depends what is normal for your family and friends. They could probably give you better feedback than myself. I have never been to a wedding on a tight budget like yours.

My friend had a similar party for their child 1st birthday, but besides pasta, had trays of meatballs and chicken cutlet. They had is catered by an Italian pizzeria/restaurant.

If you have kosher and Muslim guest you may not want to serve ham at all.

Quiche is an inexpensive food you may wish to consider.

Have you really thought about how much money you would be saving with this pasta bar? I ask because chicken can be a relatively cheap dish to serve. While pasta sounds cheap, adding all of those vegetables will probably end up making it more expensive than just having plain chicken. I would look into a simple chicken dish, maybe something as simple as "herb crusted" so you're not paying extra for fancy ingredients. If you go with the pasts you're going to have to cut down a lot on the vegetables to keep it afforable. If you do that, then yes I can see it coming off slightly cheap. Ultimately though, people are going to eat and enjoy whatever tastes good. Your guests are much less concerened about things looking cheap than you are. On a side note,my sister served ziti on her buffet and it went quicker than any of the meats.

No! I have been to some pretty formal receptions and pasta has been part of the menu. I think that a pasta bar is a great idea. It gives people a choice of food and looks lavish and is not as expensive as steak and not everyone wants or eats steak or other meats. Go for it.

That's a nice idea, just not substantial enough. It really doesn't cost a lot to have roast beef, roast turkey, or ham, along with a variety of salads, a hot veg dish, potatoes or pasta; buns, pickles and cheeses. Just a nice buffet.

We humans do not need a big piece of meat every day, and I often go vegetarian for variety in my diet. People are opening up to this more and more. I would be delighted to have pasta for dinner with a salad. Its a crowd-pleaser.

    I think it sounds good

you might consider getting some shrimp and making a scampi sauce... depending on the cost of shrimp where you live.

I am doing the scampi, garlic bread and salad bar for my wedding. If anyone doesn't like it, they don't have to eat.

I think it's a great idea considering the dietary needs of your guests! Plus, just about everyone likes pasta! I think people will prefer it to some strange gourmet thing they've never heard of.
