How much allowance?

I have a 9 yr old son, who up to now was rewarded for chores and helping out with a treasure box of toys, games, and whatnot. Now that he has turned 9 he wants an allowance. I am fine with that but not sure on an amount. Any suggestions would be nice. Thanks.

I'm 12 , have a 9 yr old brother and in my family we get our age in dollars a week...BUT 10% goes to church and 20% in the bank for savings and we have to buy gifts for our friends, Christmas presents, etc, w/ our own money. It's a great system and makes us feel proud of our selves that we manage our own money. we make mistakes sometimes and owe money to our parents (not too often) but we always learn from our mistakes this way. I highly recomend it.

When I was nine i had a set of chores that had to be completed before i got my allowance. i got 6 dollars a week. i saved up 140 to buy a super nintendo with it :-/ i treated it much better then anything else i could have ever bought. i also got extra money for doing odd jobs too. like painting a room i got 10 bucks for. i have a great sense of accomplishment and a great ability to save. i am now 21 and just bought my own house and am getting married next month :-D as i got older i convinced my parents to increase my allowance accordingly. i increased my chores and made 7 a week. once i was in 7th grade i had finally gotten up to 10 a week. i have a great work ethic because of it and have a great sense of the worth of money.

just read the person above me. yea i had to give 10% or a dollar which ever was more at the time. they said 20% to savings but i generally saved it all.

At 12, we began with $5/wk. Just junk money.

Allowance or rewards should NOT be tied to house chores - kids need to help out around the house simply because they are part of the family. Same with getting good grades - it's their job!

As another answerer said, at 9, we basically just covered everything - gave money or provided it as needed.

Well, you have two choses. I would think carefully.

    1. Give him an allowance, depending how much he does. Note things he does (making a mess) and then cleaning his mess should not be rewarded. Give him secific jobs (put out plates, wash table, unload diswasher, load diswasher help make meals) Maybe a dollar per chore per week. Think about how many things you by for him a week and you should do that much for his allowance.

So if you give him an allowance you have to make him buy his own toys or whatever.

2.Continue buying things for him and make sure he keeps on doing chores.

My son is 5 and as long as he does what he's supposed to do, he gets the $5 (the dollar equivalent of his age which we've been doing since he's 2). As long as your son doesn't have to really spend his money on anything other than items he wants, $9 a week should be sufficient.

I have a 10 year old.He doesnt get an allowance. As long as he helps out when asked without question he gets anything he wants within reason.

I have considered giving him an allowance of $5 a week now that hes in the 5th grade. He can spend it on what he wants as long as it isnt junkfood. He normally hoards all his money givin to him from birthdays and xmas for several months and winds up buying books from the school bookfairs.

I would say $1-2 a day. Some people think that's cheap, but it's still 30-60 a month (if you reward them for weekends also).

Any more than that, i think is to much.

I think it's a good idea because it will teach him the value of a dollar and the value of earning it.

I do $5.00 a week for my 9 year old son. It seems to be a good amount. But we don't buy him anything, anything he wants he has to buy it.
