Does eating chocolate while breastfeeding cause your baby to have allergies?

OK, so I know this is a silly question. But I'm a first time mom and there have been some people who are shocked that I still eat chocolate while breastfeeding my baby. They say that me eating chocolate will cause my son to become allergic to chocolate later in life. I am skeptical and think it may be an old wives' tale. But anyone know anything about this? Thanks

Oh, you get SO much advice while breastfeeding, so much advice while parenting in general! I still remember when I ordered a sub at Publix and the lady preparing it said, "I hope you aren't breastfeeding because you really shouldn't eat roast beef while you are breastfeeding." . . . WHATEVER!! That made no sense!

There has been no evidence that eating chocolate will cause your child to be allergic to it later in life. Are there people who are actually allergic to chocolate, anyways?! I wish I was! Maybe I wouldn't eat it all the time!

I would just say, "thanks for the advice!" and then roll your eyes when they aren't looking. You will receive SO much silly advice that you disagree with while parenting.

You can always ask your pediatrician if you need more reassurance.

That's silly. There is no evidence that eating chocolate can cause allergies. There isn't even a lot of evidence that highly allergenic foods such as peanuts eaten while breastfeeding can cause allergies. If that were so, there would be a lot more people allergic to chocolate!

I had both peanuts AND chocolate while breastfeeding my daughter. She can eat both with no problems.

    Seriously, that's silly.

Now, my babies didn't like me eating chocolate in the first 3 months because of the slight amount of caffeine in chocolate--and that it's acidic. If you can eat it and your babies don't mind, eat up!

It is an old wives tale, but i thought the story (completely untrue also) was that while pregnant you shouldnt eat it?

Who knows, but for now, satisfy that sweet tooth!
