Choppy calls using Vonage with satelite internet?

I have hughes net with there max speed. I got a Vonage account and it don't work right. My download speed (tried an online speed test) is 1108 and the upload speed was 91. I'm supposed to have up to 400 for upload. Well Vonage told me to get another provider and Hughes diagnostics said it could be the network card on my computer, a virus, or to much activity on my computer. I ran a scan had no viruses, there are any programs running, I even adjusted my bandwidth and there was no change. The only thing left is the network card- I guess. I did find out that I had 842 dropped packets with the last speed test. Help- what do I do?

With any satellite internet service provider your upload speeds will be dramatically slower then your download speeds. Even much slower then high-speed cable or DSL upload speeds.

You could try adjusting your Vonage bandwidth to the lowest setting possible. I believe I have mine at 35 kps and it sounds pretty good. If you make this change in Vonage, it can take a couple of hours, or longer, for Vonage to update your account. Sometimes I've had to wait days before a change in my Vonage account was updated.

You could replace your network card. They are relatively very affordable. You can monitor your card by doing further speed tests and observing what times of the day and evening are better then other times. That's a lot of dropped packets you mentioned.

In your Control Panel click Network Connections and then click on your live connection and monitor the speed and packets sent back and forth. There's also a repair button you can try.

More then likely it's the latency in the satellite upload. But if your network card is old, get another one. It's worth buying just to see.

    Good Luck!
