Also check www.asiatravel.com and www.sawadee.com.
Most of these websites offer good discounted rates (v.v. rack rates) in all price ranges and provide good information on the facilities and locations of the hotels.
Generally it will be cheaper if you prepay online with a credit card, but equally many just need CC details to hold the booking. They are reputable sites, and your reservations will be in order.
I wouldn't recommend trawling the seats of Bangkok, after arriving, probably tired, carrying luggage. It's much better to check in a pre-booked room and kick off your shoes! Wandering around Bangkok's (hot!) streets with luggage looking for somewhere to stay is my idea of getting a vacation off to a bad start!
As for location the main tourist areas for all (generally desired) facilities and related infrastructure (for getting from A to B) are Silom Road and Sukhumvit Road areas.
Overall I find Bangkok is well served by hotels and serviced apartments (which latter you'll also find on the websites) and that the standards are in the main, the best and most reasonably priced in Asia.

Have a look at these links:
Oct is still considered the low period, you can either do an online booking or scout for a place and do a walk-in booking.
