Portland cement is a generic term for nearly all modern cement. It owes both name and origin to a British stone mason named Joseph Aspdin. In the 1820s, Aspdin’s quest for a manufactured counterpart to natural or Roman cement (derived from volcanic ash and other naturally occurring minerals) led to his discovery and patent of portland cement.

Aspdin’s name for his invention served two purposes. It distinguished the material from Roman cement, which existed for centuries. It also was a marketing ploy. Concrete made from his new cement resembled a highly prized building stone quarried on the Isle of Portland.

  • I heard that when set, Portland cement resembles a stone that was already called Portland stone (because it came from from a place named Portland, which was named...well, I don't know why the place was named Portland)

The British give this name to modern day cement. Ordinary Portland cement, sulphate resistant cement, white cement and Grey cement and so on. Most have chemical name but Portland is a patent name.

The ancient Romans are credited with discovering cement. More recently better refinements have developed what we call Portland cement. It is almost the only kind we use now. The quality is superior.

In the most general sense of the word, cement is a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together. The name "cement" goes back to the Romans who used the term "opus caementitium" to describe masonry which resembled concrete and was made from crushed rock with burnt lime as binder. The volcanic ash and pulverized brick additives which were added to the burnt lime to obtain a hydraulic binder were later referred to as cementum, cimentum, cäment and cement. Cements used in construction are characterized as hydraulic or non-hydraulic.

The most important use of cement is the production of mortar and concrete - the bonding of natural or artificial aggregates to form a strong building material which is durable in the face of normal environmental effects.

Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general usage, as it is a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar and most non-speciality grout. The most common use for Portland cement is in the production of concrete. Concrete is a composite material consisting of aggregate (gravel and sand), cement, and water. As a construction material, concrete can be cast in almost any shape desired, and once hardened, can become a structural (load bearing) element. Portland cement may be gray or white.
