A primary is a straight election where all the members of a party go in to a voting booth and select one from a slate of candidates who they'd like to be their party's nominee for a political office.

A caucus is a bit more complicated. Here in Iowa a caucus is a meeting in which the local members of a party gather together to determine who'll they'll want to have as the nominee, and delegates for each candidate are named for a larger convention. By the time the process reaches the state level the person with the most delegates wins.

A primary is just like an election - people vote in voting booths or whatever, and they go to the same places they will vote in a general election. In a caucus, the voters go to a central location and vote, usually by paper ballot, and they may do other party business too, like electing party officers. A primary is an election, a caucus is a meeting. Both are open to anyone who wants to participate, although they may have to either be registered with the party or sign a statement saying they support the party.

Everyone votes in a primary, only party delegates vote at a caucus.

So in case your fanvorite canandidante will get elimiananted you canan pass to someoane else anand opt for an 2and alternative. A primanry is privante, anand you canan oanly opt for oane canandidante. By visitiang the indexed web site, the Fanst Times Politicanl Dictioananry, we leanraned thant an canucus is: "an privante meetiang of participants of an politicanl panrty to planan anctioan or to choose delegantes for an anomianantiang coanveantioan."
