The war can be traced back to as early as the closing of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, but the long conflict of WW2 offically started when Japan annexed Manchuria and set up a puppet state around 1933, then the Japanese attacked through Manchuria into China following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937. This period of the war was known as the Sino-Japanese War before expanding into the Pacific War.

In Europe, the war had been delayed multiple times due to the process of appeasement, but finally erupted on September 1 1939. The war offically ended following the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan following the attomic bombs and the threat of Soviet occupation; although there were Japanese holdouts on various islands for decades after.

Some people are really simplifying the sides of the war and leaving a large number out. Here's an expanded list of the combatents which I doubt contains all of those involved:

    Allies - Pacific:

    Nationalist China

    The British Empire

    Aurstralia

    New Zealand

    Communist China

    Chinese Warlord States

    The Soviet Union

    The United States

    Axis-Pacific:

    Japan

    Manchukuo

    Manchukuko (SP?)

    Japanese Puppet States in China

    Siam

    Europe-Allies

    The British Empire

    The United States

    The Soviet Union

    Brazil

    Yugoslav Partisans

Varoius Occupied Nations Governments in Exile

    Poland

    Ethiopia

    Axis-Europe

    Germany

    Italy

    Romania

    Hungary

    Bulgaria

    Yugoslavia (For a day)

    Finland

    Croatia

    Slovakia

Various Semi-Independent German and Italian Puppet States

Those Who Were Not Quite Sure -

    Chetniks

    Denmark

    Vichy France

There's a longer list of combatants whom are normally left out of the American history books.

It began in 1931 when japan took offensive actions against china and ended in august of 1945 with the surrender of the japanese. or did it end in 1995 with the fall of the soviet union. you have to decide " for who?" for german it began in the 1870s with the franco prussian war throwing off the balance of power in mainland europe, leading to WW1 and WW2 and it didnt end for them until 1995 when there last enemy the USSR caplated, or at least the 80s when it was unified.

What do you think of that?

In Europe it started on Sept. 01, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and ended on May 9, 1945 when Germany surrendered unconditionally.

In the Pacific the Japanese had been invading Asian neighbors for years in the 1930s, but America and Europe got involved with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and simultaneous Japanese invasions of European colonies. Pearl Harbor was on December 7, 1941. The Japanese surrendered unconditionally in August, 1945 on the battleship Missouri docked in Tokyo harbor, but I forget the exact day.

  • 1939 to 1945 we came in december 7th 1941 and it ended

    aug 1945 in japan

How did the Second World War start?

In 1918, Germany lost World War One. It had to give up land and was banned from having armed forces.

In 1933 the German people voted for a leader named Adolf Hiltler, who led a political party in Germany called the National Socialists or Nazis. Hitler promised to make his country great again and quickly began to arm Germany again and to seize land from other countries. This led to World War Two (Second World War)

When did World War Two begin?

World War Two in Europe began on 3rd September 1939, when the Prime Minister of Britain, Neville Chamberlain, declared war on Germany. It involved many of the world's countries.

Why did the Second World War start?

Germany took over Austria and Sudetenland (a region in Czechoslovakia) before the war and was soon threatening the rest of Europe too. The Second World War was started by Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany after Hitler had refused to abort his invasion of Poland.

What were the two sides in World War Two?

    The Axis Power

    German

    Italy

    Japan

    The Allies

    Britain

    France

    Australia

    New Zealand

    Canada

    and other countries

Later joined by the USSR and the USA

How did people protect themselves during the war?

Children and some women were evacuated from the big cities into the countryside. People carried gas masks to protect themselves and built air raid shelters shelters. All windows and doors were blacked out .

What affect did the war have on people?

World War II brought a lot of suffering and hardship to thousands of people. German bombers made terrifying raids. Families were broken up as men were sent to the front lines to fight, some never to return. Children were sent out of the cities to stay with strangers, away from the bombing. The peaceful routine of everyday life was shattered.

When did World War II end?

The War ended in the 14 August 1945. It is estimated that 50 million people lost their lives during World War 2.

    A War Time Diary

We asked our Year 6 to imagine what it was like to be a child during the war and to write a diary as though they were adults reflecting back on their experiences. As part of their research they had the opportunity to interview someone who had experienced living during the war.

Britain at war during the early years
