Whey Protein?

I am about to turn 30 in two weeks and am 5'6", weighing in at 260. I'd very much like to drop 60-80 pounds in order to be in better health, but have always had issues doing so. I recently read that adding whey protein supplements to your diet along with flax seed oil will boost your muscle development, which in turn will burn off the fat in your system (this of course goes along with healthy diet). My concern is that most of these protein powder shakes promote weight gain, which goes against my desired goal. Please offer educated advise.

    This is a myth. Gaining more muscle does not make you burn fat faster.

    That said, whey protein should be used only by people who are concerned with maintaining or adding lean muscle mass. Generally, this means bodybuilding.

    If your primary goal is to lose weight, adding more calories from protein may be counter-effective. If you want to ensure you retain muscle as you lose weight, then supplementing with protein can help you. But, it will surely slow your fat loss.

    The weight gain they are talking about is muscle mass. Muscle weighs about 2x what fat does, so the more muscle you can put on, the better your weight. It is also true that the more muscle you build, the more fat you burn, simply because you are exercising. I personally would not mess with the supplements until I had dropped about half of my weight, stay with natural sources of protein (chicken, fish, peanuts), then when you get into lifting some weights, use the supps.

    while it's true that most protein supplements also promote weight gain, you can find ones that don't. look for ones with very low carbs/sugars/fats etc and which focus on the protein. you'll find they have low cals as well. they do exist, just go into a supplement store and ask for them. but remember, always read the label!
