"Religion is not meant to be debated." Opinions?

I read that in someone else's response. I think any controversial subject can and should be debated, but that's only my view. What do you think?

I believe anything that you're supposed to devote your life to should be debated. Religion, especially, should be debated because it has the potential to influence many people who are followers and the people who aren't. I agree with you.

only religions I think that should be debated are Christianity and Catholicism. Christianity obviously cause death to anyone who dare go against it in the past. Fighting wars that should never happened. But that's what the bible has in its hidden message. the bible seems to be crazed about death and sex if you really read it good enough. Oh no it can't be some might be thinking reading this. But its the sad truth. with Catholicism its with the child molestation problem that's plagued it. any religion to allow that and be OK with it afterwords. I know maybe getting away from the topic of sorts here. But come on religion can be debated. There isn't some rule out there where you can't talk about it debate it and all it flaws. Its enslaved us to believe in things that might not even happen and things that not even possible. ANYONE has a RIGHT to DEBATE RELIGION. Not because some nut job who believes its morally wrong. That's my opinion now and it will never change.

If we all lived under one religion, we would have no debate! But however, there are so many religions, you will always have a debate. Its just the the political world, everyone has an opinion and there will always be a debate!

    Should poetry be debated?

Tibetan Buddhist monks make a spiritual practice out of religious debate. It's part of their training. But their approach to debate is in the service of clarifying their understanding of the teachings and ultimately, of course, of deepening their understanding of the world.

Too many times, though, debating religion in our part of the world these days is just about one group dogmatically denigrating another group's dogmatically held ideas. That's very different from trying to better understand something.

Religious language should be treated as poetry, and debated as such, in order better to appreciate how it works for people and what it may put us in touch with.

Ultimately, though it may sound very odd to say so, how religion works is much more important than whether it is factually correct. Dogmatic debates about factual correctness -- which are by far the most common kinds of arguments you see here on Y!A and elsewhere -- are a tragic waste of time.

I am an Atheist and I totally agree with what statement. There are thousands of loop holes in the bible and with years of mindless misinterpretation there's no reason to debate it. Look how they reacted when the fake Di Vinci Code came out. They took offense because it portrayed religion in a bad light among other reasons. If you try to debate religion you'll get useless answers like I don't need proof, all I have to have is faith, and my god knows everything. I could go on but I don't want to end up at the bottom of the pile.

Says who? Every thought in this world has been, and will be, debated to death, especially if it is a theory (even then, facts are still being debated).

Religion is not a sure thing in this world, so it will be debated about until the end of the human race or a fact is presented -- whichever comes first.

That is an old 50's dinner party rule, which was designed to prevent the souring of the festive mood. :)

I agree with debating religion as long as all involved are willing. Otherwise, it is just an argument, and I don't believe in arguing about religion.

I see nothing wrong with questioning religions. Some religions however do have a problem with being questioned. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons, for example, you are to accept what you are told, you are not to question any of it, you just accept it. Theocratical Communism to the core. There are scores of religions that use the same tactic in other ways, Jim Jones ring any bells?

whether we fail to locate objective there is one we are able to understand approximately. 5. The events of time and the struggles of fabric life are however the fast scaffolding which bridges over to the different section, to the promised land of non secular reality and supernal life. of direction, you mortals locate it complicated to entice close the assumption of an eternal objective; you're very just about no longer able to appreciate the assumption-approximately eternity, something in no way beginning up and in no way ending. each thing straightforward to you has an end.

I'm not sure how useful it is to "debate" religion. Discussion or dialogue would be more fulfilling to me. But i suppose in some academic circles it could be interesting to debate religion. As for trying to convert, or convince others, I think it's wasted energy on both sides.
