How do we get the Number ONE CO2 Emitter to even CARE?

CHINA is now the Number 1 CO2 emitter in the world, having passed the United States in 2006, and continuing to grow it's CO2 output at an alarming rate.

So how do we, as Americans, get a totalitarian regime which has focused it's economic engine on growth using coal technology to even CARE about stemming CO2 emissions?

I mean, this is a government that kills its own people for speaking out against it. They have one goal - economic growth to keep the growing middle class quiet so that the Communist Party maintains power.

Any significant decrease in CO2 output by the United States is MEANINGLESS until China cares.

So how do we make China Care???

(NOTE: This isn't about whether CO2 is the culprit in Global Warming. This is about the insignificant amount of CO2 the US puts out compared to the world's #1 polluter!)

Update:

China's "one child" policy has led to massive human rights violations, including infanticide, forced abortions, force sterilizations, and imprisonment.

I can only imagine what their "reduced carbon output" plan will lead to. But hey, we're talking "Saving the Planet" here, so who cares if a few hundred thousand political dissidents are labeled "eco-enemies" and put to work in forced labor camps?

It IS, after all, for the "greater good."

And you can scream about "per capita" all you want - they're STILL the biggest CO2 producer, and forcing them BACK into poverty would be a lot cheaper than forcing US into poverty! It would also affect us less and them more!

I agree. We must stamp out prosperity at every opportunity.

It just gets better and better with each passing day. The alarmists tell us the damage is already done. We are in a crisis right now and something must be done. We should all change our light bulbs and drive shoe boxes. Yet every last one of the alarmists posting here is giving the #1 polluter in the world a free pass! If the situation is so dire, shouldn't we ALL reduce CO2 emission levels? But no, the consensus is that the US should destroy its economy while others (like China) profit from what the US loses in the process.

And per capita emissions? The only ones who care are the ones trying to excuse China's emissions. Imagine what China's emissions would be if most of it wasn't third world.

One of the main goals of this whole global warming farce is to tear the US down. The Chinese are loving it. They will continue to pollute while many in the US are proposing economic suicide. At the rate China's emissions are going up, it won't matter if the US reduces its emissions because the Chinese will more than make up for it.

Many Americans seem to be gorging themselves on exported Chinese communism.

Sorry, I strongly disagree with you !

    - The average emissions of CO2 per capita in china are at 3.4 ton/year while the US emits around 20 ton per year per capita.

    - China has a more limited financial capacity and a less advanced level of technology. It needs some help to apply the most advanced of them to emitt less CO2

    - China has much more limited natural resources to reduce CO2 emissions: low availability of sun and low reserves in natural gas. The biomass is off course limited by the huge population.

    - The one child policy is probably until now what decreased the most CO2 emissions !

China is not the major nation blocking this issue regarding future climate action. It simply does not like to be used as a scapegoat, as an excuse for other countries which have more possibilities to act to do nothing.

China HAS A DETAILED PLAN TO CURB ITS CO2 EMISSIONS on which they are committed like for the one child policy.

You can find the CHINESE NATIONAL PLAN to reduce their GHG emissions here:

Source(s): GO TO CHINA TO SEE WHY THEIR EMISSIONS ARE GROWING !!! GO TO CHINA TO UNDERSTAND WHY SUCH A STRONG DEMOGRAPHIC CONTROL WAS NEEDED Ok, some can be reduced but... A lot of them are for basic needs !!! BTW: The US emits only 95% of what China emits ! what a big difference !

The truth is that China is very concerned and tries to do what they can about it. They will be hit harder than the U.S. from the consequenses of global warming. I don't at all defend the regime in China and of course their emissions is a problem, but I do think that the talk about China very often is a way for the U.S. to put focus somewhere else than on their own short comings. As being noted before here, China is still way behind the U.S. when it comes to emissions per capita.

This is the kind of thing that makes people in other countries disgusted with Americans. The USA has been the number one polluter (not just CO2, but EVERYTHING) since the 1880's, and we never gave a rat's tookus about what other countries thought. Now, finally, another country pulls ahead of us and it's an emergency, and something needs to be done immediately? Isn't that just the same as hanging out a sign that reads "Nobody Matters but US !?!"

Funny that China has become #1 by building industries to sell energy efficient products to the US. They build CFL's-We buy them, They build batteries for the Toyota Prius-We buy them, They build solar panels-We buy them. A large portion of "China's" CO2 footprint really belongs to America because we buy the products of their industries.

This is the classic example of the idea of "global" warming is out of step with the current standards for reduction.

The average person in the US tries to REDUCE their carbon footprint by buying energy efficient light bulbs, hybrids and re-usable shopping bags without thinking of where those products come from and what effect those industries are having on their local carbon footprint. This is NOT global thinking and it does NOTHING to alleviate the problem. All we are doing, so far, is moving the mess out of our country. The mess is still being produced but it is "out of sight".

The only solution for reducing carbon dioxide is to MAKE LESS by reusing items we already have (plastic shopping bags and well-tuned small cars) and stop buying new crap that makes more CO2 emissions.

Look around your house and find all the items made in CHINA and know that the CO2 emissions to make those things belongs to YOU!

The problem is here, that China is only the number one emitter of CO2 for the country as a whole. Per capita, the US is by far the leading emitter. In fact, if each person in China were to reduce CO2 emissions enough to reach pre-1995 levels they would have to live in below poverty conditions. It simply isn't economically feasible to reduce their emissions by that much, not to mention the ethical issues involved in doing such a thing.

But of you want to make China care, the best thing to do is lead by example and start cutting emissions here.

Unfortunately most people are selfish, they are not concerned about the future, only the present, they will serve themselves alone. Money and power is usually the reason why people do what they do...it is sad!

Tend to yourself first before you look outwards to others. The US doesn’t really care about its emission. So before you go about seeking how others cut their emissions, seek first how to cut yours. Any significant output by the US is sure meaningful even if China does not care.

You want to "force China back into poverty"?

    1. You accuse us of being authoritarian, bent on forcing people to go green?

    2. Good luck forcing China to do anything, thanks to operation Iraqi Freedom and numerous poor foreign policy decisions, China owns our national debt.
