I wanted to sell my wedding dress, but I unpacked it after 9 years & found it's discolored. What should I do?

It was stored in a plastic bag (like a cheap shower curtain liner) with a zipper. The discoloration is kind of light yellowish, orange light spots...like a coffee stain or light rust, speckled along the neckline, torso and along the sides. Shoot..its all over the thing. The veil is not spotted and was packed with it. Ill keep that and pack it better for sentimental reasons.

My thing is...how do I get rid of it if I dont sell it? I cant just throw it in the trash and I dont want to use it for a halloween costume for myself...that wouldn't seem right.

Should I clean it? donate it? I mean, it sounds easy enough, but its my wedding dress...I should just cut the cord and chuck it.

Any strong advise for a sentimental gal trying to get rid of a skanky wedding dress???

Update:

Im still married to my guy and plan on being so forever...

The dress is very plain, from the "bridesmaid side" of the store. Its got a deep square neck in front and back, short sleeves, "lux satin"- its not shiny almost like its inside out. NO embelishments. Only a little shine of satin around the collar and the thick, long tailed bow in back. Its beautiful to me and I have pics of it, I dont have kids so...

Im pretty crafty and have considered cleaning it, then (gulp) cutting it to make a special pillow, a lingere bag, sachets and use in a wedding album/scrapbook-my current wedding (drugstore purchace) album is falling apart.

Take it to a dry cleaners and see if they can get it out! I had the same happen to my dress, and I was brave enough to take some bleach and water and hand clean the spots out. You can use ammonia and water too which is more gentle if you want to go that route! You should be able to clean the veil yourself. If all else fails you could make or have something made from the fabric of your dress. How about a quilt with squares from your dress? I know how you feel about having to get rid of it. Hope this helps!

I have taken a Christening cape to the cleaner with the same problem ,unfortunately he was not able to get rid of all the stains , I like you, am sentimental but I would not part from this or sell it , I will keep it is is because it was mine. I was told to store things like this in an acid free paper not in plastic because fabric needs to get air I had mine in a steamer trunk but I guess that to keep things in a basement could be just as bad . If you must part from it maybe you could ask if they can dye it in some other colour. Otherwise keep it as a sentimental piece for yourself.

Send it to the dry cleaners. It's expensive, or you can donate it to a place and the cost of cleaning will be reflected in the selling cost. You have wedding pictures? Let the dress go.

My mom's wedding dress started to yellow too. She found a place that puts your wedding dress in a box so that it doesn't yellow and get gross. Idk the name of the place, but i'm sure you could find it online.

I would definitely take it to the dry cleaners, though because they would let you know what you need to do with it.

Maybe you could take it to a place that focuses on cleaning and repairing delicate fabrics. If they cant fix it, then you should donate it. Someone else might really appreciate that.

I would clean it. It is your wedding dress. Idk if ur still married to him. If you are then keep it, if your not wash it, then sell it. It is memories. Nothing I would ever throw away, sell, or donate
