I have squeaky floorboards, does anyone have any suggestions for relieving the problem?

I have a fairly light step, but every time I walk across the house my roommates hear me because the floorboards squeak. It is a wooden floor and I have no clue to fix it.

Update:

Ok. Is there any way to do it that won't put holes in the floor?

When we lived in the south we had that problem. Is it a regular wooden floor or is there carpet over it?

Anyway, my landlord came over, went downstairs, and "dusted" the bottom sides of the floors with baby powder! Then he put a little under the carpet. Magic...it was fixed! I don't know how it works, but it works! If it has no carpet, maybe put some on the floor and lay newspaper over it to walk over it and work it in between the floor joists.

Be sure it is talc not cornstarch!

The baby powder suggestion is probably the cheapest and best solution. The powder acts as a dry lubricant and stops the squeeking from two pieces of wood rubbing together or a loose nail rubbing in wood. Plus your floors will smell just like a baby's butt. Bonus!

try dusting the floor with baby powder, sweep it into the cracks between the floor boards, this is very effective in many cases of floor squeaking

a couple of screws will sort that out.just find the guilty board but make sure you screw the screws well into the board as you will not want to catch your little tootsies on it,use a power screwdriver

either put screws or nails where it squeaks. It will tighten the board back up.

yep... baby powder will do the trick. No need to buy the expensive stuff... cheapie works just as well!
