Actually, it's the President pro tempore of the Senate. The President of the United States is not "in line", so the first in line is the Vice President, the Speaker of the House is second in line, and the President pro tempore of the Senate is third. Right now the President pro tempore is Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

If both the President and Vice President were unable to serve, like both dying in a plane crash, the Speaker of the House is the next in line under succession of power. Lets say Cheney resigns, Bush can select a new Vice President through a process similar to selecting a new Cabinet member. It is worth noting that only a handful of times has a President not completed his term and that the Speaker of the House has never become President under this rule.

Good question, with an angle that makes it tricky.

If "something" happens to the president here is how the duties of the Office of the President are assigned, depending on who is capable of carrying them out:

    1. The Vice President (Dick "hand me the shotgun" Cheney)

    2. The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Nancy Pelosi)

    3. President of the Senate pro tempore (Robert Bird)

    4. Secretary of State (Connie Rice)

    5. Secretary of the Treasury (Henry Paulson)

The line of succession to the Office of the President was was set in 1947 by an act of congress. It has changed little since. Hope this helps.

Yes...that is a scary thought with that psycho woman who is currently speaker.

Phil...you are right...Can you imagine that radical racist, and former grand wizard of the KKK being that near the front of the line in for pres?

Storm...the VP IS the highest in the Senate. The Speaker of the House is after the VP.

    Phil B is right.

When Reagan was shot, Alexander Haig, who was Secretary of State at the time, said that he was "in control" and "next in line after the Vice President." He was mistaken.
