WEP vs. WPA encryptions for a wireless router?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using WEP versus WPA encryption for a wireless router? Is there a difference in speed or security between these two types of encryption?

WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy, and uses a 10 character key to encrypt the network. Because the key is static (doesn't change) it is possible for it to be cracked if someone really wants to. WPA stands for Wifi Protected Access, and is much more secure, because it utilizes a passphrase (supplied by the user) as well as shared keys, which change, making it much harder for someone to crack. I would suggest using WPA-PSK if given a choice, with TKIP (temporal key integrity protocol) as it is MUCH more secure than WEP.

I remember reading a article about the huge advantages of WPA encryptions in 2006, and stuck with them ever since. I installed Ubuntu Linux distro on my buddy's laptop, and the only way we could connect online at her house was to switch over to WEP. (That distro couldn't use WPA yet) After a few weeks, she started complaining about connection speed.
Got her a distro that uses WPA, and suddenly, everything is back to normal, and has been normal for the past few months. My guess was somebody managed to piggyback on her connection.
