Is the UAW slowly killing American auto manufacturers?

Or are greed and complacency the main ingredient for their apparent self destruction? Seems like the UAW is constantly striking or threatening to for more money. At a time when competition is fierce and the job market is not all that great, is it wise to ask for more money?

The strikes are generally about more than money. The pay increases that factory workers receive are generally much less than those of white collar workers.

Yes, American workers make more money that those in foreign countries, but it costs much more to live in this country than it does elsewhere.

What is, and has been, killing American auto manufacturers is the lack of realization that foreign manufacturers make higher quality vehicles, and that is what people want and expect. It is not acceptable to purchase a vehicle and have to return it to the dealer to get stupid manufacturing mistakes fixed. Poor quality is killing American auto manufacturers. Now, does the UAW have some influence over the quality of the products - absolutely!! The workers have as much control over the quality of the product as does the company.

American Auto manufacturers seem to think that they can just keep doing what they've always done and still sell their product. Those days are slowly coming to an end.

Look at the foreign firms that now build their products in the U.S. The quality is still better than U.S. manufacturers, but they are using the same labor pool and paying comparable wages. Obviously it is not the workers who are at fault.

YES YES. My father just retired after 38 years in the uaw. He will be the first to tell you that uaw members do not know how good they have it. a couple of years ago i worked in a plant for the summer and the attitude, work ethic, communication with the regulars there was horrible. Asian auto makers are killing us now and there is no end in sight. UAW is an anchor on the auto industry, the great state of Michigan and the American economy as a whole.

Wait,I don't recall the UAW constantly striking. One national strike in the last 30+ years.Any other strike was at one or two factories which was local issues for those factories. As for asking for more money, the UAW members have had a wage freeze since the last contract and have taken a wage freeze in this contract.I would like to see the CEO's take a wage freeze, but I doubt that.

The UAW is a business they take in money from workers too. They are greedy and the CEO and Boards are greedy too. The level of CEO compensation in the Big Three is out of whack in comparison to their foriegn competitors who are kicking their @$$ in Build quality, reliability and fuel economy. Look to the UK's former auto makers story to see where it could go in the future.

With the opening of the border to heavy trucks look out for more assembly plants to open and jobs to migrate south.

Short answer: Yep. But it's not just the demand for more money that is hurting American auto manufacturers. There are other details that are far more costly than a few million more in payroll - for example, work rules which restrict using the same person in different areas, and prohibitions on outsourcing.

not really wise, the more money they get, the taxes and cost of everything else gets higher. what the UAW should be after is better pensions, medicals and securities for the retirees, as they eventually will be one themselves. at first unions were a necessity to get the companies to treat the employees fairly and safely. and I am a union member

Maybe they ask for more money because the rest of the world is greedy. They are just part of the world.

I think the car designers play a bigger role. If they designed cars that everybody wanted at a decent price and quality then this question would not be an issue. Good question though .....
