Help with motivation at school?

I am a junior in college, but I just transfered and am now away from my family, friends, and everything I know. It's been 1 1/2 months and I still have no motivation... It wasn't like this before, and I'm not sure what to do. The school is great academically, nothing at home could match it, but I simply don't feel like myself. I had straight As before leaving, I currently have Cs and, if I can't push myself to study and work like I used to, it will only get worse.

Any advice?

Update:

Kcracer1 - I am aware of that, which is why I am asking for advice.

Man or woman? – I am not in junior college, I am a junior in college. I don’t believe it’s typical that a person who had straight As their first two years of college would begin to receive Cs in their third. I have no one to blame but myself, but I can't figure out the problem.

I'm having the same problem. I just transferred as a junior myself, and had above a 3.0 GPA and now I'm pulling high C's, which is frustrating because it's only like 2 or 3 points from a B on all my tests.

I try to focus on school, but also do things that I enjoy to balance my academic life with my social life. I do what HAS to be done first and stick to it. Then, once I get everything done that I need to, the things I "want" to do becomes kind of my reward. This keeps me motivated. Also, because I too moved away from friends and things that were familiar, I got active at my new school. I joined student organizations, I went to activities on campus like fairs, guest speakers, student life events, ect. I got to know my campus, my professors, and my fellow students. Then I didn't feel so alone.

Also, I utilized EVERY service available to me for study purposes. I explored the campus and took the time to figure out the best place for me to study. I can't study at home becuase I'm too distracted by tv and the computer and music. So..I study in the 1st floor library lounge. It's comfortable, you can eat and drink and they have vending machines, computers, study tables, ect. And you don't have to be totally quiet..which I like, becuase I can't stand it too noisy, but I can't stand it totally quiet either.

I think that it's normal going through that "I dont feel like myself" for anyone in a new environment. You just have to get your feet wet and find your niche. And GO TO CLASS. Yeah, I know how easy it is to get depressed and down about being somewhere new and to just skip. Trust me, you'll regret it. I missed ONE day and feel like I'm weeks behind now.

You should be proud of yourself being valedictorian, and thankful. But, people don't just get sent to school to lose all their happiness, energy, time and money. There is a purpose for being there and trying your hardest in school. You need to go to school to survive in the real world, not everyone gets their dream jobs and all. At least you could live out there rather than be desperate to pay for different things and have various problems. I am no valedictorian or an important person at school, but I can tell you that whether I have the motivation or not to learn, I'm sent there to succeed. Look at the words you write, how wonderful you write them.. look at yourself and wonder how you have the ability to think and doubt certain things. You may not have really seen it, but I do know you have learned much from school. The point of school is definitely not only to get a diploma or tell everyone you passed, it's a much more serious goal. It's to live. It's to shape your future and how you are going to be. You are right, school is like a routine, but do you really think you are sent there just to keep you busy?.. Not only do people learn in classes, but also from the people around them. You get a small taste of what might happen in the real world. I'm sure you would not have been able to educate your self better without the years of being in school in the past. If you look at your teachers and what education had made them, you know it really works. It just takes time and commitment to being successful. Don't let the loss of motivation take control of your life, you have to be strong and do your best. God Bless.

I think i know exactly what you feel like, Ive been down that road too, only it was when i went from middle school to High school. I kept telling myself things would improve if i kept my dream in mind( to be a journalist), but they never did. I just started hating myself and my inability to perform as well as i used to, especially in English (my favorite subject).

Finally, with my parents support, i scandalized my entire school and half my family by dropping out 6 months before my final exams and switching to the UK based CIE board of education!!!

It worked wonders for me! I realized that my problem had been that work was not a challenge for me anymore! My earlier board had discouraged thinking and focused a great deal on rote learning.

That's my story, perhaps it is similar to yours, or maybe not. It is also possible that you are simply missing the familiarity of constantly having friends and family around, missing a society "where everybody knows your name!" (and YOU). That happens a lot when you get to college. You suddenly go from a class of 10 (where everybody KNOWS everybody else) to a class of 60 where WHOA! You're not special any more!

My only advice is dont panic, take things as they come and enjoy life! Thats the only important thing, in the end.

    Hope this helps!

Well, junior college is easy, so is high school. It's typical that someone who would get A's would now get C's. If you're finding that you're feeling a little down or homesick, why not stop by your schools counselling office? Most schools have a counselling centre with psychologists because your problems are quite common on campus.

It is because of the change and you are getting use to it. You maybe homesick. I would focus on your subjects and study a little bit each day until you fall into a daily routine whereas you do not think about the change that occurred in your life. You transferred for a reason so I would try to make the best of it.

Hey, the college can look great. You achieved a notch to gain entrance. But is it worth attending if you are away from your family, friends and support group?

Also, when was the last time you had a physical exam?

And check up on your eating and sleeping habits.

Will your schedule allow exercise time?

From someone who has experienced what you have just recently. I have a physical exam scheduled this week.

I realize that my mind won't work if my body is not maintained.

    Good luck!
