Pregnancy (lack of ) weight gain???

Alright, I'm 34 weeks pregnant. I've only gained 6 lbs since my first doctors appointment at 7 weeks. Yikes! My doctor doesn't seem to be worried about it, and I was overweight to begin with. I'm eating 4-6 times a day, almost anything in sight...trying to have mostly healthy snacks, but I've been known to give into a chocolate craving here and there.... Has anyone else experienced a weight gain this low? Did you have any complications as a result?

I have nursed overweight patients who have actually finished their pregnancies at the same weight or even lighter than when they started, despite being full term. It's not that uncommon in overweight girls. One notable patient started her pregnancy at 220lbs and weighed 180 at 41 weeks.

Imagine if you hadn't been pregnant and you suddenly started eating healthy food and walking for an hour every day - what would you expect to happen - weight loss, right? Well in this case the energy needed to sustain the pregnancy is burning up extra calories, and the healthy food probably has less calories than your pre-pregnancy diet.

If your doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't be either.

    Best of luck.

My pregnancy is somewhat similar, but not near as extreme as yours. I only gained 1-2 pounds between doctor's visits the first several months. However, at my last appointment (yesterday) I had gained another 7 pounds since the last visit (for the second time in a row). I am now 24 weeks. My lack of substantial weight gain has already caught up with me. But one thing my doctor did say was that little weight gain early on is actually a good thing, because as you near the end of your pregnancy, the weight gain is more rapid. If your doctor is not concerned about your lack of weight gain, and you trust your doctor, then I wouldn't worry about it. He or she is the expert in this situation after all. Best of luck to you!!

I'm also overweight, and now at 26 weeks I'm only 1 pound above my prepregnancy weight. I was worried too but my doctor said it was fine. I eat like you - try to keep it healthy but now and then have a not-so-healthy treat. As long as the baby is growing normally, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm 31 weeks and up until my last visit, I had only gained 6lbs. The last visit I gained an extra 5lbs, but it was water weight. My doctor is thrilled. She wanted me to gain as little as possible to begin with because of my size. And like you, I eat constantly, but because I exercise, I don't gain anything. I count it as a blessing. I'd rather lose 15lbs as opposed to 40lbs. =) Congrats and keep up the good work!!

Some women gain weight every where and sometimes too much weight at that, some only gain weight in their belly. If your doctor is OK with your weight I would not worry about it.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I LOST weight...and she still weighed 8lbs and 1 oz.! The BEST diet I was ever on....however with my son who was just born in August I gained about only 10 lbs... I was overweight also, and my dr wasn't concerned...they had done ultrasounds and knew the baby was growing. Believe me, if they were concerned they would let you know and they would be doing tests...

well i'm 18wks and i still haven't gained ANY weight. i know i actually lost weight from what i use to weigh. just like you, my doctor isn't worried. he said as long as my baby is growing healthy and a normal pace, it's fine. i've had a blood and urine test, and everything was normal and i'm not anemic. i'm actually glad, less weight to lose when i'm due :P good luck to you and your baby.. you're almost there!!! :)
