The devil's coach-horse beetle (Staphylinus olens) is a very common and widespread European beetle, belonging to the large family of the Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). It is also called Ocypus olens by some authors and biologists.

Judging by the size of its ears I would say an Indian Elephant

I hope you put it outside to carry on munching the woodlice, unless you've got loads in your house that is! Don't worry its not going to eat the wood in your house, or you either!
