chihuahua's and the cold?
ok this may seem like a silly question, but i have never lived anywhere it snows nor have i ever owned a small dog.
i have a chihuahua. she weighs 7lbs. i am going to new york for christmas and will be taking her with me. to me she seems as though she has the most fragile pathetic little legs that will shatter in the freezing cold. i'm sure i'm exaggerating. i bought her a little jacket because i don't want her to get cold when i walk her, but i didn't get anything for her paws.
i'm usually against putting clothes on animals because i feel like they hate it or will uncomfortable. do i need to get her little footsies? did i even need to get her a jacket? we live in florida so it doesn't get nearly as cold as new york.

she definitely needs things to keep her warm, like sweaters and jackets
boots can depend on how long she will have to walk on the ground/if any snow or ice shes on
if u dont wanna do booties, pet stores sell paw wax to protect her pads and keep her from slipping on ice/snow

Yes. I feel the same way about the doggie clothes as you do but I live in Canada and when summers over I do have a little coat or vest for the little guy. In the winter , I prefer not to bring him outside unless it's nice and only for a short period of time (like 5 mins. lol). In your case, I would definitely reccomend getting little footsies...not like hard shoes but knitted ones or something. You definitely dont want her walking around in New York when it's freezing out with nothing on her little feet that would be like torture, you know what cold feet feel like.

Well my friend has a 3lb chihuahua that she trained to pee outside and here in the winter time it gets to be about 15 °F, but she is so quick to do her buisness there is really no need for her to be outside long... Although, where you live in Florida and the climate is so hot all the time, such a drastic temperature change could really affect your dog.

Yes the she does. I have a Yorkie who acts tuff until he gets cold. I also recommend paw wax because the salt is real hard on his paws. If she is not used to footsies you mite want to start training her to wear them it saves u a lot of time when you come up here.

She needs booties if there is snow on the ground. In the very cold, use peepads and keep her in. I don't let mine walk on the frozen snow and ice, so I carry them. These are desert dogs.

I live in NH and my son and his wife have a chihuahua. Muttley [the chi] has a fleece lined jacket, sweaters, t-shirts, p.j's, baby's recieving blankets and booties. and the little dear still shivers...lol.....he hates the booties and will not keep them on. Loves his clothes though, he will actually go get his shirt or sweater and bring to you to put it on him...

You can look up Foster Smith Dog Catalog on line and they should have dog boots to protect her paws or just type in a search for dog boots

YES she does need a warm coat and footsies. dogs with thin fur need warmth just as much as we do. i have two big rescued greyhounds and they typically have only three percent body fat so i actually put TWO coats on them during cold weather.....
