I just adopted a dog and within the first few days he had blood coming out of his anus? What could this be?

He is a small dog (Min Pin) and I am really worried that he has something serious. I contacted the adoption agency and rather than take him to the vet, they wanted to watch him and see if it got better with medications. A few days before I adopted him, after the initial interview, the representative dropped him off to me at our "puppy date" place (when you adopt a dog you have little meet ups to see if they are the right "fit" for you) and she told me that he had pancreatitus a few days prior. I googled it and I haven't been able to find ANYWHERE that blood in his stool (it wasn't solid people) is a symptom of pancreatitus. Now, he is back at the adpotion place and they still haven't taken him to the vet, but they are telling me his stool solid now and he is eating...but he got bitten by another dog. So, is this really pancreatitus or something else. I just don't want to make a commitment to keep the dog and then something bad happen to him. He was a $150.00 investment.

Update:

thanks to all for some of your responses. I would like to point out that a DOG IS an investment. Time, money, becomes part of the family...now that is an investment. Bottome line, I like the little guy and I hate that he is going through this. I do have his vet records (with the exception of his last visit from the pancreatitus) and the vet records indicate that he is up to date on all vaccinations and has been treated by a vet in the past. As far as the adoption agency goes, they are called PAWS of Austin. Any one know anything?

Update 2:

oh, and he has not eaten anything foriegn. All I was giving him was Nutro for puppies.

Blood could be from anything from swallowing something that is now stuck to the medicine they are giving him to intestinal parasites. Incidentally, where did they get the medicine that is supposed to clear this up if they didn't go to a vet??? This does not sound like a reputable place to get a dog. I would take the dog to the vet myself (spend the extra $50 or so on an office visit) and find out what is wrong with him! If you can't handle whatever it is I guess you could ask for your money back and move on. But I couldn't leave a puppy in these conditions where he doesn't get needed veterinary attention and is allowed to be biten by another dog! I would take my puppy, go to the vet and get him well, bring this place to the attention of the local animal rights people, and never allow them to see my puppy again.

You also mentioned that the rep dropped him off at your puppy date place...did you ever actually see the facility that you bought this puppy from and his living conditions? If not, that is a HUGE red flag on this place!!!

Pancreatitis is common in Min-Pins and other breeds of that type but its symptoms are far more severe than just a bloody stool. Bloody stool can be an indicator of everything from simple stress to Coccidia to the dreaded Parvo and without proper testing you will never know. Is this adoption place getting the dog vet care or are they just winging it. I would not trust to adopt from a place that is giving you so little information and the dog sub-standard care.

I have not heard of blood in the stool to be a cause from Pancreatitus.

There could be many reasons for the blood. Including Parvo. Insteninal Paracites for one and also Coccidia or Giardia too.

Here read about both and see if it fits the symtoms your dog has.

I have to agree with Freedom also. The dog is sick no matter what it has. For it to be bitten while under the care of this adoption agency seems a bit off to me also.

Your efforts would be better spent on another agency.

Are they willing to refund your money. They rub me the wrong way. If they KNEW the dog had something wrong they should have disclosed that before you agreed to adopt. Now a dog bit yours just how would that happen? someones not watching out for your dog very well.

    P. S. I did a search there is some information. Type in-"Pancreatitus,in dogs." you need to read it. I just glanced I saw the words, could be fatal. I DID not read it so don't panic. read. Good luck.

    Re: Blood

When there is blood coming from anywhere on a dog that is never a good sign. I have no idea why they told you not to take him to a vet. If he really is an investment, you need to protect it and take him to the vet and get him evaluated and treated. The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be. $150 will seem like nothing.

I would honestly look for another pet and hopefully you will get a healthy one. It also sounds to me like this adoption agency is running on half empty. They do not seem to know what the hell they are doing. Ask for a refund and if they wont give you one then cut your losses and run. This pup is in need of vet care and its not going to be cheap. Unless you are prepared to possibly spending hundreds of dollars on this dog, I would walk away. Poor thing.. But its not your fault.

This is what happens when back yard breeders live in the moment and think it would be cool to have a litter. Dogs end up with genetic disorders, illnesses and break hearts and cost thousands to care for. What you are seeing in this pup is a glimpse of the ignorance.

see i don't see adopting a dog as an investment..its a member of your family, and when you add on another member to the family you take on responsiblities that go along with that..granted if this is still the pancreitis then yes they should still have to pay for it since it happened while he was in their care, but other than that, if you adopted him he is your responsibility..i hate that people see dogs as something they bought from a grocery store..like "oh it got broken so i need to return it"..if you don't want him then take him back and let someone who actually wants him adopt him..things happen..no matter what kind of dog you get you run the risk of something bad happening, whether it be an accident or genetic..

Any time there is blood popping out of your dogs anus you will desire to get it to a vet. This occurred to my dogs as quickly as some years in the past after a bout of diarrhea. i do no longer think of it became into too extreme however the vet did a fecal pattern and doubtless prescribed antibiotics. optimistically this is not any longer too extreme with your dogs and would desire to in uncomplicated terms be a small hemorrhage interior the intestinal wall if he became into constipated. in uncomplicated terms a vet will understand for effective.

Take him to the vet. The poor thing must be suffering. No one can really answer you except the vet. You adopted him, you better take responsibility for him the right way. I take my hamster to the vet all the time, so!

Pancreatitis is not good. Has he eaten foreign anything? I would take him to the vet.
