I am writing an essay on traditions and want to compare the tradition in the short story I am analyzing (The Lottery) to some that we as Americans participate in. What are some traditions that are bad or could be better?

Throwing trash out of car windows.
Hazing. (At the college I went to, a freshman died during hazing, I believe it was fall 1978. "Previously undiscovered heart defect" just doesn't cover parents' grief.) The LA Fire Department gets sued regularly over stupid hazing stunts.
