At 27 years old, your current one has certainly served its time, but if the firebox is still in good shape, and your landlord doesn't want to replace it, definitely call the guy back and say his fix didn't fix it. It could be the thermocouple that has gone bad, which isn't that expensive a part. As a permanent part of the house, you may be able to get your landlord to reinburse you for the repairs of the furnace as well..

Since you are renting, you are in a bit of a tricky situation, since you get to pay for the energy used by whatever furnace the landlord wants to provide, but it might be possible to have him/her to replace it instead of fussing with repairing an aging furnance, and also as a service to the environment as you'll put out less CO2 to heat with a modern furnace.

close the device down and permit it to relax. Then attempt right here. First sparkling the pilot assembly and thermocouple. If the pilot orifice gets grimy lowering the flame it won't warmth the thermocouple sufficiently. you may get a small comfortable-bristle brass twine-brush related to the dimensions of a toothbrush out of your community ironmongery shop for this objective. And use an exceedingly wonderful stitching needle to bathe out the pilot orifice. gently in the two circumstances. commence the device and confirm that the flame is predicated without put off on the thermocouple. If it blows to a minimum of one area or misses altogether, it won't save the thermocouple warm sufficient to function. on condition that neither of the two above innovations paintings could you communicate changing the thermocouple altogether.

Call the landlord, it is their responsibility. Yes, you need a new furnace. This is nothing to fool around with, it could be quite dangerous.

He should have replaced the thermocouple at the same time. Call a different repairman who knows what he's doing.
