Has anyone tried nipple stimulation to induce labour where it worked?

Just wondering if this has been an effective way to induce labour and how long it took after doing it for 15 minutes an hour over a few hours (as I have read online to do)?

I'm a Labor and Delivery Nurse, and sometimes when we have patients that are in labor (because their water has broken) and it's the middle of the night, the doctors don't usually want us to use Pitocin if their contractions are forever apart - so sometimes we instruct the pt to do nipple stimulation, works pretty well most of the time...Can keep things moving (although slowly) without pitocin.

I have tried it but I don't think it works just like everything else that can "self induce" labor. It does cause some contractions but nothing I would consider more painful than the normal BH. I'm beginning to think that the only times stuff like this works is when you are already starting labor and you just don't know it. It is true that hormones are released because of it but the hormones that are released are the same hormones that are already present in you body if you are near your due date. And if you aren't near your due date you shouldn't try this anyways. Good luck! Most of this will seem silly to you when you are holding that precious baby in your arms someday soon and you will realize you could have waited another year for him/her if you had to.

I did it with my second pregnancy and boy will it KILL you. It works and it bring on some very strong I mean strong contractions. But if you really wanna go in labor then try it. When I mine I would do it in the shower or bath tub and put a warm towel on the other breast and when you feel a contraction stop and wait a couple of mintues to start back up on the other breast. It may take a couple of days. Try walking sex and castor oil. But that has a bad taste and your gonna be on the toilet alot. Good luck with everything and congrats.

I tried it and ended up having an emergency c-section after they lost the baby's heart beat. The contractions are unusually strong when you use nipple stimulation.

I tried it with my second one. It did successfully cause labor contractions but when I stopped, they would stop. The result was irregular contractions and I had to be induced. I would not recommend it. I would recommed walking and sex if you are having other signs. Otherwise, don't force it..your body will know when its time.

Funny, my wife and I were just talking about that. Sucking on nipples causes the brain to release Oxitocin. Oxitocin is the same hormone they give you to induce labor since it causes the uterus to contract. In theory, it should help start contractions if it's time and baby is ready to go.

My Dr told me to go home and have sex when my baby was due/overdue and it would cause labor. Well it worked.

i havent but i have read the outcomes arent good because it makes contraction really strong which can hurt you ad your baby and make labour way to painful

i never really heard someone personally say they have done it and it worked, but i have read that they can bring on painful contractions.
