Question about Judas?

Judas got 30 sheckels, $84 today, give or take, to betray Jesus. Did you know that when Judas saw what was going on he tried to give the money back, but they wouldn't take it and let Jesus go? He then threw the money into the temple then went and hanged himself. What does this say about him? Did he have regret, did he not mean for this to happen? Maybe he was ashamed of what he did?

I guess I ask this because I've been thinking about redemption, not just of Judas, but in many situations. I wonder if maybe Judas wasn't evil, he made a mistake, as so many of us have, but his mistake led to the greatest example of God's grace? Was he just used as a tool, then?

I have no idea what my opinion is, but I would value the opinions of others. Please, let's all be respectful of each other!

Update:

tebone0315 Thanks so much for pointing out those scriptures to me! Do you know that in all of my studies and the few times I was comfortable enough to bring this up with other Christians, NO ONE ever brought up Luke 22:3 or John 13:27! That brings on a whole new dimension to it! Yes, it does say something that Judas allowed himself to be used by Satan, or that Satan even thought of him as one to use, but he was being used by Satan! Also, that Satan asked for Peter, but was denied? You rock, man, I never knew any of this!

Update 2:

I appologize, it was Brother Michael who brought up about Satan asking for Peter. I read the scripture and it says that Satan demanded to sift "all of you" like wheat, not just Simon (Peter), that's just who he was speaking to right then. So it says Jesus prayed that their strength wouldn't fail, but Satan was able to get to Judas. The plot thickens! The Bible so rocks!

Satan entered the body of Judas

    Luke 22

1Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

2And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

3Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

4And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

5And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

6And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

7Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.

John 13:26 Jesus responded, “It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl.” And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27 When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, “Hurry and do what you’re going to do.” 28 None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant. 29 Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor. 30 So Judas left at once, going out into the night.

It suggests to me, that even good people can make bad choices, even horrible choices if they are not careful.

At one point Judas must have been a a fairly righteous person because he was, after all, selected as an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. Not everyone had that honor.

From what scriptural evidence we have, it does appear that Judas regretted what he did or at least felt great sorry, guilt and remorse. As to whether he was used as a tool, that is hard to say. However er, with God knowing all things, I think it was anticipated by God that someone would betray Christ and start the whole crucifixion and those atonement in motions.

Likewise I believe that God "knew" that Adam and Eve would partake of the fruit before they did it, thus allowing God's plan of having us be born into the world come to pass. otherwise, if Adam and Eve had not done so, we would not be here.

Yes, Judas felt remorse-Matt. 27:3. Also, Jesus (God) chose him to be a disciple and Jesus even called him a devil for his traitorous and thieving ways-John 6:70. God chose Pharaoh to basically be bad because He wanted to-Romans chapter 9. God takes pity on those He wants to. Judas was used as part of the plan because God wanted to show His awesome power and because He has the right to as God. Unseen forces are at work in Jesus' Passion, the human agents are tools of the devil-John 8:44, 12:31, 13:27, 16:11, Luke 22:3. I doubt if Judas gets to enter Heaven.

Judas did regret what he did. Unfortunately regret is not repentance. Judas was thinking more about the money than anything else. When he realized what he had done, he tried to make it right by giving the money back, but the damage had been done.. He just didn't repent of his sin.

God's plan had to be carried out. Judas made the decision to help in that plan. If Judas hadn't betrayed Him, I'm sure someone else would have.

Judas is an example of someone who lives as though they believe but in the end, they are found out. Don't think about it. Pray and read your Bible so God can direct your life. Don't believe everything you hear, test it with your Bible. If "red flags" go up look deeper into the issue. Judas betrayed Jesus, yes, but his problem was he sinned and refused to do what was necessary to get back to God, if he was a believer in the first place.

Many will deceive and be deceived is also in the Bible.

Judas knew what he was doing when he betrayed Christ, but he did not realize the outcome of his actions. When he saw the outcome of his actions, he could not live with what his actions had allowed to happen and as a result, he took his own life.

Is Judas in Hell? It is not known for certain. Yes, Jesus said that it would be better for Judas if he had not been born, but maybe Jesus was speaking of the mental and emotional anguish that Judas would suffer and not the torture of Hell.

God is always willing and capable of forgiving anyone at any time in life even at the moment of their death. The catholic Church says that there are people in Hell, but cannot state the name of any particular person.

What Judas wanted was for Christ to be Captured but when he realized that Christ would be killed he regretted his part and I believe he repented, but felt that his sin was too great so he hung himself. I think some Christians paint Judas as evil, but in truth he wasn't he made a mistake, just has Peter did when he denied knowing Christ. Peter repented and became the Leader that many love. Judas should be forgiven for what he did.

This is a very in depth question. From my understanding of the Bible, all sins are forgivable by God if you truly do repent and turn your life around. The only sin that is not forgivable is blasphemy against the holy spirit, and continuing working against God' s holy spirit ( or active force) .Judas work ed directly against the holy spirit by betraying Jesus. But Jesus knew what was going on, but he didn't try to sway Judas into not turning him in. Everything happened for a reason.

In the words of Christ, Judas was lost before he even did the deed.

Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name; I guarded those whom You gave to Me, and not one of them was lost, except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

Judas betraying Christ was fulfilling prophesy:

Psa 41:9 Even a man desiring my welfare, I trusted in him, eating of my bread; this one has lifted up his heel against me.

Satan knew, through the prophecy, that he would get one of the apostles, Jesus made it clear who it was.

Joh 13:27 And after the morsel, then Satan entered into that one. Then Jesus said to him, What you do, do quickly.

What is chilling is that Satan asked for Peter, and Jesus said no.

    Luk 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold! Satan asked for you, to sift you as wheat;

Jesus was in complete control of the situation. Judas may have had regrets, may have not realized that they would crucify Him, but that does not equal redemption. I believe, just as Jesus said, that he was lost.

  • You are right. Christian children are taught from an early age that Judas was evil, but there is not a Christian alive today who has not denied Christ in some small way. I believe Judas WAS sorry. Only God knows if he will actually make it to Heaven.

I seriously question the exchange rate that you are using, though. Those "pieces of silver" would be priceless by todays standard simply from a collecters perspective.
