How many naps does your toddler take, and for how long?
My son is 17 months old, and only naps once a day, usually at about 1 in the afternoon. If I lie down with him (which I sometimes do) he'll sleep for a good hour, sometimes more, but if I put him down for a nap in his crib, Im lucky if he sleeps for an entire hour. So his sleep schedule is roughly:
8:00am- wake up
12:30-1ish- nap
1:30-2ish- wake up from nap
8:30pm- bedtime (sleeps through the night)
This seems to work well for him, I was just wondering about naptimes of other kids his age... are most 17 month olds down to one nap a day?

i visited with my doc today for my daughter's 15 month visit and he said one nap a day is great. My baby's schedule is almost identical to yours, but her nap is usually 1 hour in the crib or 2 hours if I lay with her.

Sounds about normal. The issue may be that his sleep patterns are different when you don't sleep with him. That's tough.
My son (who is now 4) fought sleep so much that he would either not sleep at all or he would have giant late afternoon naps. He was generally very difficult and stubborn. It seems that although he is the one that needs naps more, he is the one that fights them.
My daughter, who is now 2, still has a nap. She will generally nap for 1 and half hours. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
So while your son is very normal--one nap, going to sleep by himself may take him some time. He's probably used to seeing you if he opens his eyes in the middle of a nap. If you're not there, it's "Mommy!". Been there. You might want to transition him to sleeping by himself if that's what you want to do.

My daughter just went from two naps a day to one nap a day. She is 13 months old. She does sleep about 12 hours through the night, though, and she naps 1 1/2 - 2 hours in the late afternoon.

My daughter is 3 1/2 (4 in December) and naps for 2-3 hours a day. At school she naps from about 1-3 PM. At home it's usually 2-5 PM. She goes to bed between 8 and 9 PM.

My one daughter was very funny around that age when it was naptime. When she was old enough for it not to be a hazard, she had all these stuffed animals in her crib. So I'd put her down for a nap in her bed (not her crib because she got too big for that) at about 1:00 and as soon as I left she would climb into the crib and play with the stuffed animals for an hour and a half and at 2:30 I'd come to wake her from her nap and she'd be playing in her crib! And she'd say, "Mommy, I'm tired." So then she'd sleep until 4:00 instead. So eventually I got smart and told her she could play with the stuffies after her nap otherwise I was going to have to remove them from her room, so she started sleeping when I put her down for her nap and playing after. In the morning she'd wake up around nine and she'd go to bed around nine too.

when my son was that age he went down for a nap at 12, he wakes up in the morning at 7. His nap is usually 2 1/2 hours. Maybe wake him up at seven and he may sleep better at nap then. Also always put him in the crib to sleep, if he goes to sleep in the same place everytime he will sleep better. It's routine for them, which kids thrive on. God bless!

my daughter is 20 months now and only has one nap during the day and has only had one since she was bout 15 months old, sometimes it is for half hour sometimes 1 hour and then on those lucky days 3 hours, and then I get the horrible days where she wont sleep at all, I suppose it just depends how tired they are at the time you put them down for a sleep, I have found that if she wakes after half an hour if i lay down with her she will usually go back to sleep for another half hour maybe another hour, hop I have helped

It all depends. When my son was that age, he would either take 2 short naps for about an hour, or one longer nap for about 2 hours. I think it had a lot to do with how late he slept in and what was going on around the house. When we were home together, he tends to take 2 but when Daddy is home and there is more stuff going on, he was too excited to sleep, lol.

My little boy is 23 months and his day looks like this:
7a- wake-up
1:00-2:30ish- nap
7:30-bed
I bet your little guy could nap a little longer, but if he wakes up happy you probably don't have to worry about it. My boy is just a mess if he only sleeps for an hour or less, so it's important for us that he naps longer.
A sleep book that I just love is called Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady's Gentle Guide to Helping Your Child Go To Sleep, Stay Asleep, and Wake Up Happy by Kim West.

That's about what mine does, schedule wise...(15 mos)
A lot at this age are down to one nap - but some sleep as long as 3 hours...some still do two smaller naps...it's different with each kid.
My first (now 4) stopped napping altogether at 17 mos. Crazy boy! :)
