Cracks in my firebox!!?
After some foundation stabilizing, I found some cracks in my firebox. They are new (no soot inside the cracks) and range in width from hairline cracks to 1/4 inch wide. They are in various locations, but if you added the lengths all together, it would be about 5 feet in total.
1) Do I call a mason to fix this? If not, then who?
2) Can this be fixed by using a heat proof caulk on the cracks?
3) Any idea how much this should cost?
4) What is the best way to fix this?
5) After the repairs, how long do I need to wait before starting a fire there so I don't burn down the house?

call a mason and tell him whats wrong...he should be able to point the cracks with some fireclay . i would charge about 250.00 if i did it...fireclay sets with heat so wait a day and fire it up...a few cracks in the firebox shouldnt burn the house down as there is nothing but masonry surrounding the back of the box...

A mason should be able to fix it with-in an hour or two. They would just have to coat the area(s) with special type of mud. Then you should be able to use it the next day (24-48hrs).
- check with the mason when calling them, to make sure that they "specialize" in that type of repair.
