hand sanitizer vs plain alcohol?

is washing your hands with a 70% solution of rubbing alcohol any different, effectually, than using a commercial hand sanitizer like purell (the active ingredient of which is a 70% solution of alcohol)? i hate the perfumes in the latter, but i'd like clean hands. links to scientific studies would be nice.

I don't think it would clean the hands differently, but the hand sanitizer has some emollients in it so it doesn't dry the skin so bad. Plus, the gel probably stays in place better--if you use rubbing alcohol it's just gonna run all over and may not stay where you want it to for as long, which may hinder it working as well. Also, not all the hand sanitizers smell the same.
