Why not gift certificates for a manicure/pedicure, half hour massage or reflexology session. Gift certificate from their favourite mall, to their favourite restaurant .

Do they do puzzles or suduko?

A gift basket of teas and coffees along with the chocolates or cookies.

Good bottles of wine are always nice and appreciated.

Rather than buying en masse hopefully you're getting to know these people as individuals and starting to get their tastes and interests. If not lady , there's no time like the present.

Be straight with her. Say, "Listen Aunt X, I appreciate that you wanted to take me to get a birthday gift. The truth is I haven't been the best niece so I just wouldn't feel right accepting a gift from you, but what if we just spend a day (or a few hours - your option here) together this weekend?" This might be a good way to mend the fence while clearly making a case to her why you do not want to accept a gift from her this birthday.

There is really only a certain amount of candles that people can have. This is difficult though because you don't know them very well. I would suggest getting them something that they can do, maybe vouchers for resteraunts or movie tickets. You could make them movies baskets, with movie tickets, a small pillow and blanket and junk food. Or you could make them a pampering basket with lotions, shampoo, conditioner, a loofah and a fluffy whit towel. Do you know if they drink tea or coffee? If they drink coffee, get them coffee mugs with a selection of nice coffees. If they drink tea get them mugs with a selection of nice teas. If they are more wine drinkers, get them a nice bottle of wine with some wine glasses. Ask your fioncee what he thinks they would like. After all, he should know them better than you do. Maybe you could give them a joint present from the two of you. Good luck.

my neighbor has plants in pots all the way around her porch. every year i find a rare plant for her, or grow her one from seed. she loves it.
