I know I could research this on Wikipedia, but I want to hear people's responses - not dribble from an encyclopedia.

You could go way back into history - biblical or otherwise, but it might be easier to look at the 20th century alone.
Jews and Arabs lived peacefully side-by-side in the area, but in much smaller numbers than today.
Before, during, and after WWII, Jews from across Europe fled the oppression and anti-semitism there, and sought to create a Jewish home on the site of their ancestral homelands. Many call this movement Zionism.
After WWII, the U.N. recognized the birth of the state of Israel.
The surrounding Arab nations immediately saw this as unacceptable, and encouraged the Arabs living in the area to join them in a fight against the newcomers, and "push the Jews into the sea." It was around this time that they coined the term Palestinian for those living there (there is no racial, genetic, or cultural distinction between Palestinians and their Arab brethren).
The Israelis successfully defended themselves in that first war, and all the ones after that (the big ones being '67 and '72, when they captured the Sinai, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights).
The surrounding Arab nations refused to allow the Palestinian refugees to become citizens in their countries (which is why you have third and fourth generation refugees and "camps" that look like cities), and began funneling money and weapons to them, so they could keep fighting the Israelis.
I believe the majority of Israelis and Palestinians would like to peacefully coexist. Sadly, there are extremists on both sides, and evil elements in the surrounding countries that find this unacceptable. Many Arab states fund the "intifada" as a means of distracting their own people from the oppressive rule and lack of civil rights, women's rights, and democracy in their own countries.

Where? on the shores of Palestine around the time of WWII and after when the Jews started coming back to what they feel is their "homeland". They arrived on the shores in ships, some being forced back out to sea by the British navy.
Now, WHEN did things go wrong is another question, which is what most of the other people here are trying to answer, but that's not what you asked.

the main pinpointable 'start up' in present day reminiscence may be the British distant places place of work in worldwide conflict a million. till now that it substitute into out of Jewish palms for 2 thousand years and any claims based biblical theology heavily isn't 'rationally' resolved. So in case you seem on the 1st substitute of potential which would be reliably documented: in WW1 the British instigated a rebelion via the arab tribes of the area against the Ottoman empire that controlled it on the time. Their maximum suitable comprehend envoy substitute into 'Lawrence of Arabia' who stirred up photographs of 'Palestine' being free of the Ottomans in the minds of Arab rebels. Then on the tip of WW1 via the Balfour announcement the British 'backstabed' the Palestinians via embracing a Jewish state in the region. yet does that recommend that is going to likely be Palestinian? IDK. distinctive different solutions are speaking on the subject of the degree of Israeli reaction and regular therapy of Palestinians. I hesitate to furnish my sheltered and white-bread attitude. yet i will nicely think of that as long as every person nonetheless lives who's a be certain that lost a toddler, or a toddler that lost a be certain, or somebody that lost a companion or brother or sister on the two area of the conflict, then there only isn't peace. So do not anticipate it to cool down for a hundred years, or one area is obliterated.

Things went wrong probably when Zionists first proposed to take over a land where the majority (97%) weren't Jewish and kick out the existing people.
Things went even worse wrong when the Zionists (now Israelis) committed a lot of terrorism, massacres and brutality and drove out the majority of the people because they were the wrong ethnicity/religion for the state of Israel.

To make a long story short. The Palestinians never wanted peace with the Jewish people. It does go way back to history and that's probably what you need to do to learn more about what really happened. There will never be a Palestinian state and why I say that is because the Palestinians or Arabs, do not want their own state. What they do want is to rid all Jews and they want Jerusalem as their Capital. Until this day, the radical Islamists Muslims are still firing off rockets into Jewish communities. Even if Israel's PM gives away land just like PM Sharon gave Gaza away to the Palestinian people, there is still no peace. They give land away for peace. Now Gaza is used by radical Islamists who are using it for training terrorists and for rocket launching. Now Israel is negotiating with another terrorist group just for peace. Okay it was a long story.

It went wrong when the people living there were forced from their homes & lands. Using the excuse that the Jews "used to" live in that land thousands of years ago doesn't cut it.
I'm sure that thousands of years ago someone once lived where we all live now. Does that mean we should all get out, should the descendents of those who once lived where we live now, want to reclaim the land of their long lost ancestors? Hardly.
What should have happened was those displaced Jews should have been awarded all the land they needed in Germany after the war.

Arabs and Jews have been fighting for so long that it's almost impossible to picture them living side-by-side. In 1948, when Israel became a state, in order to do that, somebody had to sacrifice land to give it to the Jews. Palestinians were booted out and became refugees in countries that couldn't afford to support them. Imagine how awful it was for them to lose their homes and businesses and find yourself on the outside, looking in! I don't condemn the Jews for defending themselves, and I don't support Hamas or Hezbollah. I don't know the solution, but I do believe that our support both militarily and financially of Israel has led to the hate the Arabs feel for America.

It goes back in the judeo-christian bible to the story of Caine and Abel. The conflict is based on a belief that some people are more entitled to a relationship with god than others. It goes back to illiteracy and a time when people couldn't read so didn't analyze these stories for themselves, and so their church or temple leaders told them what they thought, filtered through their personal issues, and told them what they should think. It goes back to a sense of loss that starts with birth and is projected onto the world. We're talking about a conflict that is so bereft of perspective, it could take us all down with it if we're not very careful.

We can't change history but maybe we can influence the future.America's backing for Israel and the horrendous treatment of the Palestinian people lies at the heart of the world's problems and needs balancing.
e.g.cfoster's views and links are clearly biased. What's needed is a solution that falls in the middle.
