Is it better to buy a car with cash or a check?

I'm going to be buying a car soon. Not a brand new one, or a really expensive one, or anything. Just a decent, used car.

My fiance insists that it's better to use cash and says that it's a "better negotiating tool" and "it's just faster" and stuff. He seriously makes car salesmen seem like demons or something, lol.

But, personally, I just do NOT feel comfortable carrying around a couple thousand dollars in cash. I would MUCH rather do things by check. It's just safer and there's a better paper trail. Plus my mom would probably much rather use a check as well.

Does it really matter whether I use cash or check? What's your opinion here?

This is my first time buying a car (though I'm not buying it by myself - my mom will definitely be with me, and so will my fiance and his dad).

Update:

PS: I will definitely be buying from a dealership or a car lot or something. I'm not going to buy a car off some random guy on the street... If that matters...

its better to use a check ,then you have a good record of the transaction, and also good records of what was spent ,you never know when you might need to know about this,,if you use cash ,there's no real good records of it at least for you, good luck.

The dealers only like cash more than a check because not all checks are guaranteed to have the funds right away. If you can get an official check (cashiers check) from a bank, that money is guaranteed and will make the salesmen feel more safe about the money that they will be receiving.

Good luck with getting the car by the way!

If you are buying from a dealer, they will want a cashier's or bank check, NOT a personal check.

I just sold my truck, and the buyer handed me CASH.

In my opinion, you should have a paper trail of major purchases. That means at LEAST a check, if not a bank/cashiers check.

If you hand the guy cash, he could say you never paid him. Make sure the guy writes up a bill of sale, and that the title is signed over correctly to you. Ask for a receipt, too, if you end up giving him cash.

It used to be that way because it would take a while to get paid from a finance company. Nowadays the dealership can get paid within 24 hours of submitting the deal, via wire transfer, eliminating a trip to the bank. AND, it is very possible you would get a better "cash price" on the car if you were financing it because they would make money on the financing as well. I actually have a whole scheme worked out for that. You walk in there like you are going to finance it, get the "deal" you want (where they think they are going to make money on the financing) and then cut them a check. They hate it but they have to honor the price on the car!

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net/ that has been around since 1995.

Use a check if you prefer. The only thing is they will most likely call your bank to verify the funds, or they have a system that runs the check and the money is instantly withdrawn. Maybe they don't even take personal checks-- call and ask first!

Never buy anything expensive with cash. Besides being a "red flag" to the Government, a lot of people (like yourself) don't like having large sums of cash about. Our Auto Insurance agent in NY wouldn't even accept cash in payment of the monthly premiums; "too dangerous", they said. Good luck!
