How to maximise my Wi-Fi speed?

I'm sharing my Internet connection with a neighbor who has the modem and who uses the USB cable plugged to his laptop, and his internet speed is lightning fast (his torrent download speed is at least 300 kbps).

While me, who lives 15 metres away and uses WiFi, only has 1 bar in the WiFi signal strength and my Internet speed is so lamentable.

Do I need to buy another router for myself (although our modem is actually a modem + router)? I tried changing the WiFi USB drive but nothing happened.

Please help me?

Where is your wireless router ? Is it on ground level ? Raise it higher and further away from other electronic devices. ie cordless phones tv's modems............ Do you guys have the same router ? Not all routers are the same speed either.
