I remember looking at my own newborn daughter and saying, "You'll never know how much I love you until you have a new baby of your own."

Their mother has been over critical of them all their lives most likely -children learn what they live

It all depends on the facts concerning their present parent/ son or daughter relationship, relationship with others such as false teachings/manipulative people they surround themselves with and your communication also.

If you KNOW they are being over-critical than why aren't are you saying so to them?

SOMETIMES OUR PARENTS RAISE US TO ACT A CERTAIN WAY. BUT AS THE CHILDREN GROW UP AND GET THEIR OWN LIVES THE PARENTS TEND TO START DOING THE THINGS THAT OUR PARENTS TOLD US NOT TO DO..

Whatever the reason, they should let the past go and not let it spoil the present.
