Is it rude to leave a bowl of candy out at halloween?

no we have done this a few times..we even left frozen Popsicles one year..cause you get so hot out there..and we have found a few each year when we go at other people's houses

No, I don't think anyone would consider that rude. In fact, it's very nice that you're still thinking of the trick-or-treaters and leaving them some candy even though you won't be home. Leaving a picture of you and your nieces with a friendly note like you said would be a nice personal touch. However, if you do decide to leave a bowl out, some kids will come by and take all the candy and either just leave the bowl or take it with them if its something they could use to collect candy in (like a pumpkin bucket or something.) This has happened to us twice when we left candy out. Still, it's a nice gesture for you to put something out for them. An idea is to have your neighbor keep an eye on the bowl, that way they can stop anyone trying to take the whole thing. I would make sure its an inexpensive one anyway, just in case anything happens to it. Good luck, and Happy Halloween :)

Well, I still go trick or treating and if I do see a house that leaves the candy out like that, I would just choose around 2-3 pieces of the candy I like, but my cousins on the other hand (8 &11) would take 5-10 handfuls and leave. My mom wraps the candy in bags and put a sign that says take one and most of the little kids do because we live in an upper class neighborhood. :) PS. Whoever gave you thumbs down was probably just doing that to benefit themselves and trying to get the best answer. People can be so rude these days. We also go trick or treating as a family too.

There's no need to apologize just leave a note asking the children to only take a few pieces so there is enough for everyone. Most parents monitor this pretty well so I'm sure you won't have any problems. The kids will be happy you thought about them even though you weren't going to be home. It's really very thoughtful of you.

I don't think its rude, but I do agree that the first group of older kids that come trick-or-treating without parents will likely just take the entire bowl. Because of this I don't think its worth it. Just leave your light off, people know what that means.

I think that would work, but be advised.... some nasty lil rug-rats actually pack trashbags for such a house as yours... and will literally help themselves, to the whole bowl. Leaving all the other little kiddies candy-less. I say give it a whirl, maybe the kids in your area are nicer than the ones in mine.

nope, it's fine to do that. In my area, most people do that. Though i've seen many kids just take the whole bowl of candy, leave the bowl and run. Personally, if i was in your situation, i'd just take the kids, and not leave any candy out....im kinda cheap that way.

♥ No this would not be rude... :-) Just make sure to leave your light on and the note big enough to read. A coworker of mine did that because she has 2 young children whom she takes trick or treating and she lives in a place similar to you.

All the candy and the bowl will be gone in the first 5 minutes

Do nothing, you have you own things to do on Halloween and per sides if you leave out a bag the first trick or treaters who arrive at your door will take the lot.
