using castor oil to induce labor.........?

I am tring to figure out the effectiveness of using castor oil to induce labor! If you have tried it, did it or did it not work for you? How much did or would you use? At what stage in your pregnancy (weeks) did you try it? How bad was the diarrea after wards? Would you do it again with another pregnancy?

Thanks to everyone who answers, I am currently 36 weeks and have gestational diabetes and am afraid she is getting to big and end up having to have a c section. That does not sound appealing to me at all. Doctors are not willing to look for another 3 weeks and i want to try and avoid a c section as much as possible!

I drank Castor Oil when I had my daughter. My husband was home on leave from Iraq and was scheduled to leave on Sunday. I had an amnio done on Tuesday and the doctors said that while he lungs were mature, they were at the lower end of mature and that they did not feel that they should induce. I didn't agree with them. I felt that since I was 37 weeks pregnant that she would be fine. And she was!! I drank 2 oz mixed with 2 oz of orange juice at 8:30 pm Wednesday night. I didn't have any diarrhea, but I did vomit like 5 times in an hour. Nothing I hadn't dealt with before :-) it was like the morning sickness I had in the beginning!! I woke up at 5:20 am Thursday morning and my water had broke. I went to the hospital and delivered my daughter at 3:32 pm. She was healthy then and is healthy today. She didn't have a single problem with her breathing, and she weighted in at a healthy 7 lbs. 0.9 oz.

I am due with my second child, a boy, on Christmas day. I am still undecided if I will use castor oil. I have nothing against it, but I don't feel the enormous sense of urgency that I did when I had my daughter.

Don't let people on here scare you into believing that if you try to induce your own labor you will hurt or kill your baby. Whatever you decide to do, Good luck. :-)

If you use castor oil DO NOT drink it. First off it tastes nasty, secondly it causes diarrhea and you do not want that while you are in labor. If you are going to use it rub it on your belly and cover the area w/ saran wrap and place a heating pad or moist wash clothes over it. It still helps to induce labor w/ out the bad side effects. I will warn you it is messy though! Also, rubbing your nipples for extended periods of time, sex and walking help to induce contractions also.

Castor oil is bad for the baby, it can give him health problems. Look, you are afraid of getting a c-section, right? Well I just had my first son exactly 3 weeks ago and I had to get an emergency c-section. Let me tell you, they are not that bad. If you are really concerned for the well being of your baby, you will wait for him or her to come. Castor oil will only make you sick (I know I tried it at 40 wks) I was 41 wks when I delivered. Before they gave me the c-section they prepped me with an epidural and a bit of other pain meds. I didn't feel a thing. Recovery takes time, but when you're holding your little one safe and sound, it'll all be worth it. You'll see. Please do not rush things. You could be putting your baby in danger :(

The worse thing you could DO at this point is down a bottle of DISGUSTING castor Oil... first off it does NOT induce labor, BUT, it can make you DARN GOOD AND SICK and give you severe diarreha which COULD dehydrate you SEVERELY causing an imbalance in your electrolites AND, some pretty wicked stomach cramps to boot... Not to mention the stuff is VIAL TASTING... You are only 36 weeks.... the baby won't be too big and if so, SO WHAT, a C-section is almost painless and VERY QUICK compared to the HOURS of pain one endures during regular labor... Let your baby come when IT wants to come..... give that child all the time it NEEDS to grow and mature in the womb where it is safe and secure UNTIL IT DECIDES IT'S READY TO BE BORN.

castor oil will not induce labor. It effects your digestive system not your reproductive system. All it will do is give you diarrea and if you take to much, it will cause really bad cramps. If you are already uncomfortable because of pregnancy, why would you want to add that. If you have gestational diabetes, your doctor should be monitoring how big the baby is getting. They can tell by what you are measuring each week and by feeling your belly. If they are not concerened by what they are finding, then you sould try to relax as well. Let nature take its course.

I know you are uncomfortable...but i read that if you take the castor oil and you aren't ripe (thinned and ready to start dialating) that all it will do is make you throw up and have diarhea. My SIL did this with last baby, and she got so dehydrated from it that they would have stopped her labor, just to get her rehydrated or her body rested and ready to deliver (which postponed her delivery about a week)

    Good luck

Do not use castor oil, as it is bad for your unborn baby. My son was born rather large at 9lbs 4 ozs. I did not receive an ultrasound until I was 38 weeks to find out his size. Just be patient and wait it out. I know its tough but hang in there! You have to put your unborn baby's safety first. If you do have to have a c-section it will be worth it for that beautiful baby growing inside of you! Good luck!

If the doctor wants you to have a c-section have it. I have always heard that caster oil will work but there can be some serious side effects for the baby.

When you take the caster oil it will make you have bowl movements until your cleaned out. Well if it is doing that to you it is very possible it could do it to your baby as well. If that happens where the baby makes it's first bowl movement inside of you, it can make the baby die. Remember whatever you eat or drink the baby gets it too.
