Philosophical question of why a god would create us....?

If there is a truly omnipotent deity, who by that definition is all knowing and all powerful, why would it need to create a race of beings (such as ourselves) to 'serve him' and to 'spread his word' and live life a certain way to be able to live in a paradise at the end of your earthly life (or after 'judgement day', etc.)?

What do you suppose is the purpose of creating life only to struggle and suffer as much of the world does? If this deity knows how it will all turn out anyway, what is the point? Does it seem unusual that a deity of that nature would be so far above us that there's no way we'd be really necessary for it to create us as mere mortals?

Update:

Having children is a biological means to carry on the species. Has nothing whatsoever to do with why a god would create us...

Update 2:

Mr. Knowitall: Excellent reply. I can already see the faith based replies not really answering the questions posed.

Update 3:

Rebecca: Why would this god need someone to love and love him with his powers so far beyond our comprehension? What's the motivation for that?

Update 4:

Bizzymom: The Earth being a 'test' doesn't answer the question of ultimately why we were created. I think that response is premature. I agree that if there was a logical reason to be here that we could be put to a 'test' but my question does not assume there is or isn't any evil involved in its premise.

That is an excellent question! And why would he create us with free will so we had the choice of serving him or not? And why would he hide from us, as he does, so we can only believe in him on faith?

It's interesting how so many religious people have such good answers for nearly any question having to do with God, but when come down to the really important, really puzzling questions like this one they say 'Well, it's God's will and we can't understand it.'

Assuming that we as a species are a willful creation of an omnipotent deity may be a flawed premise. Also it appears that you have assumed an afterlife with just rewards and punishment. There is no proof of an afterlife. And is there any reason for an afterlife?

Life is all about struggle and survival. That is what it does. As biological creatures, we have pleasure and pain. Yes, there is suffering. That's a part of life.

Maybe you give too much credit to this deity. Is there a deity that is involved and knows the every day workings of man and all things? Wouldn't that deity be extremely bored if that were the case? I think that the deity is a benign one that does not interact in the every day affairs of man or the Cosmos for that matter. I don't think that your fate is set in stone.

The physical laws of the Universe indicate that this planet will ultimately be too hot for life as we know it, but the building blocks for life are abundant in the Universe and living organisms likely exists on other worlds.

It seems to me that the form that we as human beings have is not necessarily an intention of a deity. The ancient texts reveal that man is created in God's image. Conversely, maybe it is the opposite. The writers or prophets of those ancient texts have anthropomorphized the deity. Why should the deity look like humans? I think that the deity is much more immense that anything that we can imagine.

  • We must note that God's highest creations were sentient beings, which are the Angels and Mankind. Yet, it was an angel who rebelled against God for they and we all have free will. Thus it goes along with the fall of the angels and then the fall of man. With the fall of man came the corruption of truth, which in turn became the Pagan religions spread throughout. And since God gave us free reign over our lives, we can live in sin and darkness and/or seek him and rediscover the truth that has been lost or diluted.

Now God may be omniscient yet that does not discourage free will. While God may know our outcome, we know not our own or his intentions. So it seems that we are like a blind man trying to find a toothpick on a floor filled with mousetraps. Eventually, one will find the toothpick, maybe after a dozen snaps, hundred snaps, or even one. Thus when your duty on earth is done, you will go to heaven or hell, depending on the sins you have committed such as sloth or greed. But it is our suffering that aids us in our own purgation against our sinful nature. So if God exists, there is a purpose, therefore Aristotle's final cause proves it true.

Well thats an illusion and false teaching that God requires us to "serve" Him/Her/The Creator/The Most High or whatever title you choice. This Being, has no desire to be served, God simply created us all so God could experience Himself. There is no judgment day, at the end of our physical existence, we all go back to the same Divine Source from which we came, there is no judgment involved, that is yet another falsehood that many teach to keep people living in fear and keeps them from discovering their true selves and instead relying on someone else to tell them who they are.

Suffering is unfortunately a part of Life, for us to learn lessons and grow from them. But suffering ceases to exist when we change our response to the suffering. Life is going to happen and we can't change that, but we do have the power to change our reactions and thoughts. That is the power of having God within us, we are Co Creators, in this spiritual journey called Life.

Well, I am catholic and I don't believe that God created us to serve him. What kind of a God would he be if he needed us? not an omnipotent one. I don't think that God aspect us to live a certain way, on the contrary he lets us be free, choose whatever we want to do and believe that is why we have what is called "free will" freedom to decide, do, say, act, however we want. Life is not just created for us to struggle and suffer, on the contrary we are here to find happiness and enjoy ourselves. And the beauty of all is that we are the ones that choose what makes us happy.

we are here for the experience of being here. we live to experience life.

i dont think it would be so much that God "needed" us, as much as maybe the experience of life, and everything it has to offer, was just way too good to miss out on.

yes, the world is full of stuggles and sufferings, but it is also full of joys and wonders. the highs and lows, twists and turns, are all part of the rollercoaster ride. and in the end it is usually only the good things you remember most.

ask yourself: would you get rid of the bad times, at the cost of the good times?

more often than not it seems the good is worth the bad, and maybe the bad wasnt even so bad after all. it seems the whole-experience is better than none at all.

IT is for asking questions and for taking struggle and suffer for finding out answers and for exprimenting with truth that GOD has created the human kind in the world. So there is perfect aim and motivation behind all creations,no doubt.

Well He is God and you can't understand Him.

    Gasp the Christian reply!

God is love. That is the start and finish of it.

Tell me one person that can understand love totally.

Because if you can understand love, then you can begin to understand something about God.

And all the attributes of love that we put in a person like you loving your spouse. Like trust, and commitment, and hope, with someone that you see It is the same feeling and emotion believers have about the love of God for us and us for him.

Did man create the ability to have the emotions that we have? Or are they apart of us that came with the bodies we live in. Our bodies by themselves have the capacity to love. How did love get there?

Love will cause a rich king to marry a worthless peasant girl. Love will cause a mother to help her wayward child, when no one else will. Love will cause a rich man to pour all of his money to save his sick child of disease. Love will want to find a remedy for struggle and diseases that afflict those around him in need. Love will reach out and draw the one he loves close to him.

Man has the capacity to do that for his suffering fellow man. But those emotions and feelings did not come by man. They are inside of us. Who put that in man to know and feel all this and respond like we do.

    There's my Christian reply.

Because this earth was a test, a test of free will, to make a choice to follow God or Lucifer.......... that is why we are all here, and when God decides that it's time to wrap up this show, then and only then will he appear.......... as to why we have to suffer so, Lucifer and his minions have plenty to answer for that over........... it's not all God's will, it's that He can't fix everything, cuz he certainly isn't Santa clause and who would believe in a God that said yes all the time...... think of how spoiled we would be..........

God created us so He could have something to love and something to love Him. He didn't want mindless love, though, so He gave us free will. Yes, He knew from the beginning that we would mess it up, but He loves us anyway, and those of us who have accepted His offer make the rest worthwile to Him. Just as I love my children and am grateful that they've been born, even though I know that they'll have struggles and and difficulties in life too.
