Do 1099 contractors get drug tested?

Does anyone know how often an employer will drug test a 1099 person, as opposed to a W2 person? I assume 1099 typically don't get tested since they aren't getting any benefits or anything. What has been the typical experience of 1099 contractors out there?

Update:

This is in the IT sector mainly, that I am asking about. But I would imagine the same applies. I figured they couldn't since you aren't technically an employee.

if you are a 1099 contractor, then they dont have a right to make that a condition - your not technically an employee.

In my part of texas, taxi drivers are 1099 contractors. When first 'hired', they must take a drug test. After that, they are subject to random drug testing. Averages out to something like once a year, excepting the initial test.

The first drug test may be only to get the permit. But the subsequent tests are likely for insurance purposes. (Some of the taxi companies here buy insurance on the drivers, instead of making the driver buy it for themselves.) I am unsure, though.

I hate to tell you but most general contractor never drug test their subs. I have a construction company, Ive been on both sides and have never been asked to take one ever. Having said that We don't typically work on huge projects. Things may be different if big money is involved. My daughters school is getting an huge addition and they didn't drug test or background check any of the guys working on that job. I found this disturbing.
