I have a 1997 Pontiac Montana that was dying on me at strange times last year. Seemed like a battery problem, but the battery checked out fine. Dealership wanted to charge us $300 to look at and fix.
My husband finally took a look at the cable that leads from the battery to the starter. It was dirty and loose. He cleaned it and then tightened the bolt and that fixed the problem - for free!

I think we are on the wrong track here.
Sounds like the engine is dieing out and causing the voltage changes.
Maybe fuel filter?
Maybe the fuel pump?
Is there a accessory (air conditioner) seizing up and stopping the engine?

I think it's the alternator too.
Ask how much they charge for that diagnostic test before you get one. I've heard they can cost about $100.

check the alternator it could be running on it or charging sometimes, may be a short if it only does it sometimes, had this problem on a chevy blazer
