Why is my cat bringing dead animals home?

Your cat my bring home a mouse or a bird home and drop it proudly at your feet. Your reaction would would to start screaming and shout at the cat. You may keep it outside for a bit.

Don't tell your cat off because it then thinks 'Oh, a mouse isn't good enough lets go and get a big pigeon or even a squirrel then (s)he'll be pleased!'

So from now on when your cat brings an animal simply praise the cat and then dispose of the animal some how. It's a gift and that's what cats do. I know I've got 6 cats!

Your doing nothing wrong Its just in her nature to hunt. My cat hunts unsuspecting house guests. I would try and feed the cat something higher quality. The vet can recommend a few good ones available at the supermarkets in your area. The first cat my family had growing up wouldn't even touch tuna fish after we got her a better food. If it makes you feel better my first cat would come home with underwear and leaves. From personal experience its more pleasant when they bring home a dead bird instead of someones tighty whiteys.

It's trying to give you a present. If you tell it "No, this doesn't make me happy" it's next thought (because it is a cat and so is using cat logic) is to bring you something bigger, better, more impressive until you are happy. I think you're going to have to learn to put up with this. Give kitty praise so that it knows the thought behind the gift is mch appriciated.

Seriously, Im flabbergasted with some peoples understanding of animals. Cats are hunters...and what do hunters do? The more you yell at it (which by the way, its a cat, cats dont understand, maybe get a dog, or child) the bigger the present!

He/she is trying hard to show how grateful he/she is and is trying to help provide for the family. Perhaps showing him/her that the smaller kill was unwanted made them think it was not good enough and they went for something bigger.

Don't tell the cat off, and get rid of it when they can't see you do it...just wait until they aren't around, then toss it in the bushes or wherever.

Trust me, if (s)he's just leaving it whole you are lucky. On a few occasions we've had our indoor/outdoor cat leave a young faceless rabbit on our doorstep. She ATE the face off! So gross.

Your cat obviously thinks that you are telling it off because you are not happy with the gift, so he/she is trying to impress you with bigger and better gifts!

Try being pleased the next time, and hopefully that will reduce the number and size of the 'gifts' in future!

I'm easily pleased by one of my cats. He goes out and 'catches' me a mouse, which happens to be a stuffed toy one!

I discovered which neighbour he'd been pinching them from. He was going through the cat flap when they were out and grabbing one out of their cat's box of toys!

its quite common for this ,your cat is bringing you home a gift. its normal even though you may find it cruel and distastefull, just don't encourage her when she returns home with something. after all they are predators, put a Bell around her neck so it will make a noise as she creeps up on animals it may give them a chance to escape before being caught

Your cat thinks it needs to do your hunting for you.

With Kittens they first bring dead food home for them and then bring live food for them to catch and play with so they will learn.

Your Cat is just trying to train you to be a good hunter in stages.

your cat is showing you it's love for you through catches. Usually cats eat these and consider themselves clever and decent hunters and are therefore showing you what they can do. And also rewarding you.

Try to show your cat where these animals belong by taking the dead animal outside in the cat's view. This should show the cat these animals are meant to be kept outside. (It stopped my cat)

They're hunting trophies - cats do that.

When I stayed at a youth hostel in Hindhead about 45 years ago, they had a huge cat that used to kill foxes and bring them home.
