Kitten Spay?

My kitten was spayed yesterday and since coming home she has only eaten 2 or 3 small pieces of kitten chow. She is drinking water and peeing, but not eating or pooping. She won't eat canned food either. She is walking around and starting to play some. Also, her incision looks really good. But she has an upper respritory infection is on Clavamox for it. How long after surgery does it take for a cat to start eating again or is this related to the stuffy nose? Any suggestions or advice is great. I do plan to call the vet first thing in the morning.

Her appetite may not be very good this evening. She will be sore and stilling feeling the effects of the anesthesia.

The other problem is the URI. Cats will not eat when they cannot smell.

Offer her a wet food that is very odorous, like the seafood flavors if she likes them. In general, a lot of seafood is not good for kitties because of the high levels of phosphorous. Seafood occasionally is okay (about once a week).

For a few days, you can also tempt her with a little meat flavored baby food, just be sure it does not contain onion.

Another possibility is to warm her food slightly in the microwave, but check for hot spots before giving to her. Warming the food will bring out the aroma. I warm my cats foods regularly and they eat better.

Give the Clavamox as directed. It isn't the best tasting but it is a good antibiotic. Antibiotics can cause stomach upset on empty tummies, so try to get her to eat.

    Purrs to you and kitty.

Aw, what a good cat Mom you sound like! I have had hundreds of feral cats and kittens spayed & neutered over the years. You don't feed or let them have water the night before. Take them in early and pick them up at closing. Some vets want to keep them over night, but it's over kill unless there was some type of problem during the surgery. She'll be sleepy and sort of out of it for a few hours after wards, maybe even until the next day. Ask the Vet for some pain meds for her. Usually given in liquid form permeasured doses you give once a day for 3-5 days. She should be fine in a few days until then she'll sleep more and play a little less. Watch for any bleeding at the insion site or discharge of any kind, reddness or swelling. If you see any of those call your Vet. No you won't need to take the day off. Good luck with your kitten I'm sure she'll be a source of love , comfort and amazement for many years to come!

All of the kittens I breed are spayed or neutered before going to their forever homes at 12--16 weeks of age. One of the benefits of early age altering for my kittens is that they bounce back VERY quickly. Whereas an adult female may take a week to recover from a spay, a young female is usually bouncing off the walls on the third day following surgery. I've never had a kitten refuse food the evening following surgery and I've probably had 75 altered to date, if not more.

I believe that your kitten may be suffering more from the upper respiratory infection -- or that on top of the effects of anesthesia -- than the surgery on its own. I'm surprised the vet performed surgery on a kitten that was sick.

Keep offering both wet and dry food. The canned food can be warmed in the microwave to make it smellier. Hand feeding may be necessary if she doesn't have much appetite.

Calling the vet is a good idea.

So long as the cat is behaving well and not losing weight, I think the cat will be fine. If however her normal eating pattern doesn't return soon...I would seek and examination by the vet. Cats are keen animals and she may not be eating a lot at the moment due to the lingering anethesia or her having a cold.

Give her another day..she may still be feeling naseous from the sedative. If she is still not eating after tomorrow, then I would call the vet.

If you'd had a general anaesthetic yesterday and now had your tummy glued back together you wouldn't want to eat much either. Leave her be, she'll be fine.

everybody is different and she just came home, give her a couple of weeks and I'm sure she'll be up to her old tricks. if a women had what she had in an operation, it would be called a hysterectomy.

Give her a couple days. She will snap out of it. I had my cat spayed and declawed..took her about 3-4 days to become what she was before LOL

You're probably OK. Good thing to call the vet, anyway; but don't lose sleep over it.
